Biography Kate Winslet is an Academy Award-nominated British actress. She is best known for her roles in Titanic, Sense and Sensibility, and for playing diverse roles in other period films. Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born on October 5, 1975 in Reading, England. Acting is in her genes. Her father, Roger Winslet and mother, Sally were both actors. Her grandparents, Oliver and Linda Bridges, formed and ran the Reading Repertory Theater. Her uncle, Robert Bridges and both her sisters Beth and Anna are actors. It was but natural that Kate would follow in their footsteps. When Kate was 11, she started out with a commercial. She studied acting and attended a performing arts high school and next appeared on stage in the plays, Adrian Mole and Peter Pan. In 1991, Kate made her television debut with a co-starring role in the children's science fiction series on BBC Dark Season. She next appeared in 1992 in the made-for-television film Anglo-Saxon Attitudes. In 1993, she appeared in an episode of the medical drama Casualty. In 1994, Kate made her film debut when she starred as Juliet Hulme in the critically acclaimed film Heavenly Creatures by director Peter Jackson. She played the role of a bubbly teenager who aids her friend kill her mother because she doesn't let them be together. Kate became famous in UK with her role as Marianne Dashwood in the period film, Sense and Sensibility opposite Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant. She even received an Oscar nomination for the Best Supporting Actress. For her performance, she won the Screen Actors Guild for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Best Supporting Actress Award. Kate went on to act in two period films in 1996: Jude and Hamlet as the tragic Ophelia opposite Kenneth Branagh. However, it was with her role as Rose DeWitt Bukater opposite Leonardo Di Caprio in James Cameron's blockbuster film Titanic (1997) that she became an international celebrity. She also received another Oscar nomination for the Best Supporting Actress and became the youngest actress to receive two Oscar nominations. In 2000, Kate acted in another critically acclaimed period film, Quills. In 2002, Kate was nominated for the third time for an Oscar as Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her role in Iris. In 2005, she received her fourth Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress for her role in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). In 2004, she also gave an amazing performance as a widowed mother of four boys in Finding Neverland. Kate is also a mother in real life. In 1998, Kate married director Jim Threapleton. They have a daughter, Mia Honey, who was born in 2000. However, they got divorced in 2001. In May 2003, Kate got married again to director Sam Mendes. They have a son, Joe Alfie, born on December 22, 2003.
