Biography

Salma Hayek is an Oscar-nominated Mexican actress. She is of Lebanese and Spanish ancestry. This Latin beauty is best known for her role in Desperado (1995) and the title role of Frida (2002).

Salma Hayek Jiménez was born on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico. Her Lebanese father, Sami Hayek, is an oil company executive and her Spanish mother, Diana Jimenez is an opera singer. Her devoutly Catholic parents wanted her to have a good education and sent the 12-year old to a Catholic school in Louisiana to study. However, Salma was sent back home for allegedly playing pranks.

Salma always wanted to be an actress and she dropped out of college in Mexico City to pursue an acting career. She started acting at a local theater and enacted the female lead in Aladdin and His Marvelous Lamp. Her work in theater was followed by commercials.

The exposure Salma got from commercials landed her the role in the serie Un nuevo amanecer (1988). In 1989, when she was 23, she got her first break with the title role in the hit Mexican soap opera Teresa. She became a star in Mexico but Salma was too ambitious to settle for that.

In 1991, Salma shifted to Los Angeles to pursue her ambitions. For more than a year, she took English lessons as well as acting lessons from drama teacher Stella Adler.

In 1993, Salma struggled for months in auditioning for the lead role in Mi vida loca (1993) but only managed to get a minor role. Though not a big break for her, she became a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

In 1994, Salma starred in the award-winning Mexican film, El Callejón de los Milagros ("The Alley of Miracles").

It was in 1995 that Salma finally got her big break in Hollywood when she starred in Robert Rodriguez's film Desperado opposite Antonio Banderas. She dazzled audiences in Hollywood with her Latin looks.

Salma went on to do more than 30 films including Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) with George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino's The Faculty (1998) opposite Jordana Brewster and Elijah Wood, Kevin Smith's Dogma (1999) alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and Will Smith's big-budget film Wild Wild West (1999).

However, it was with the title role in the film Frida (2002) that Salma proved her acting prowess. She co-produced the film about Frida Kahlo, a Mexican artist. Her amazing portrayal of the role got her Best Actress nominations at the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and Golden Globe Awards. She won the Imagen Foundation Awards Best Actress award and the Golden Camera Best International Actress award. She became the first Mexican to be nominated at the Oscars. Not only has the Oscar nomination endeared her to her fans, but has also increased the curvaceous Mexican's star wattage.
