She is one of the most successful artists and has made it to the top on the power of her stunning five-octave voice. She is just as famous for her ballads as for her hip-hop songs. Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, Long Island, New York. Her mother, Patricia Hickey is a former opera singer and her father, Alfred Roy Carey (formerly Nuñez), is an aeronautical engineer of African American and Venezuelan descent. Mariah's parents got divorced when she was just three. Mariah then grew up with her mother who noticed her vocal talent when she was just 3 and helped her develop it. When she was just 17, Carey moved to New York City to pursue her dream of becoming a famous singer. Out there, she started writing songs with keyboardist Ben Margulies. She next became a backing vocalist for singer Brenda K. Starr. Starr helped Mariah get her big break when she gave Mariah's demo tape to Columbia Records head Tommy Mottola at a party. Apparently, Mottola heard the tape in his limo on his way back, and was so impressed by Mariah's voice that he hurried back to the party to find Mariah. She soon landed a contract with Columbia. In 1990, Mariah released her first album titled Mariah Carey, which became a chart topper. It included the hit singles Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Someday, and I Don't Wanna Cry. She not only became an instant success but also won Grammy awards for the Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. In 1991, Mariah came up with her second album, Emotions. It also went on to be a big hit. It included the hits Emotions, Can't Let Go, and Make It Happen. Mariah had proved that she was here to stay. She went on to give hit after hit the whole decade. In June 1993, Mariah married Mottola, who was much older than her. She soon released her third album, Music Box which surpassed the sales of her earlier albums. It included the hits Dreamlover and Hero. In December 1994, Mariah released the album Merry Christmas, with the hit All I Want for Christmas Is You. In 1995, Daydream was released with the hits Fantasy and One Sweet Day. In 1997, after separating from Mattola, Maria released the hit Butterfly, with a tinge of hip-hop. In 1998, Mariah worked in a duet with Whitney Houston in The Prince of Egypt (When You Believe). In 1999, she released the album Rainbow with the hit Heartbreaker. With this single, she became the first artist to top the charts every year in the decade of 1990s. She was the diva of the ‘90's. In 2001, Mariah parted ways with Columbia and signed a contract with Virgin worth around 80 million dollars. She next starred in a semi-autobiographical film, Glitter. The release coincided with the 9/11 tragedy and the film as well as the album fared poorly. While promoting the film, Mariah suffered a breakdown due to overwork and was hospitalized. Virgin soon cancelled its contract with Mariah and bailed out 28 million dollars. However, Mariah bounced back with her ninth album, Charmbracelet (2001), with the label Island Def Jam. After a hiatus, Mariah came back with the super hit album The Emancipation of Mimi. She might be past her peak but she still has some hits left in her.
