Biography

Drew Barrymore is an American actress successful both as a child and as an adult. As a child actress, she was best known for her role as Gertie in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). She is also famous for her roles in the films Poison Ivy (1992), Batman Forever (1995), The Wedding Singer (1998), Charlie's Angels (2000), and 50 First Dates (2004).

Drew Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975 in Culver City, California. She comes from a family of actors such as John, Lionel, and Ethel Barrymore. When Drew was just 11 months old, she took her first step in the showbiz world with a television commercial for Puppy Choice dog food. She soon followed it up with commercials for Pillsbury chocolate-chip cookies and Rice Krispies cereal.

In 1978, at the age of two, she made her acting debut with a role as a boy in the made-for-television movie Suddenly, Love.

In 1980, Drew appeared in another made for television movie Bogie as Leslie Bogart. That year, she also made her big screen film debut with a role as the daughter of William Hurt in the sci-fi movie Altered States.

In 1982, at the age of seven, Drew got her big break when she played the role of Gertie in the blockbuster E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial directed by Steven Spielberg. With the success of the film, Drew became a star.

Drew next worked in a string of films including Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Firestarter (1984), and Cat's Eye (1985). However, her personal life was in turmoil.

When Drew was just nine, she was exposed to alcohol and got drunk at a party for actor Rob Lowe. She was soon into drugs like marijuana and cocaine. Meanwhile she continued working in films like The Adventures of Con Sawyer and Hucklemary Finn (1985), Babes in Toyland (1986), Conspiracy of Love (1987), and Far From Home (1989).

In 1989, concerned with where Drew's wild life was taking her, her mother, Jaid committed her to a drug rehab clinic. However, Drew ran away from the clinic using her mother's credit card. She was soon caught and had to do the after-school special, 15 and Getting Straight (1989), about the pros of getting straight and quitting drugs. However, she was far from being straight. She was so distraught that she attempted suicide in July 1989. She joined another rehab clinic and this time was successful in quitting drugs. However, she obtained a legal separation from her mother.

In 1990, Drew with help from Todd Gold authored her autobiography, Little Girl Lost. The book focused on her journey from a drug addict to a clean, drug-free girl.

Drew got a grip on her life and came back with the films Poison Ivy (1992), Guncrazy (1992), The Amy Fisher Story (1993), Doppelganger (1993), and Wayne's World 2 (1993).

Drew however continued being a bad girl and was seen in Bad Girls (1994), Boys on the Side (1995), Mad Love (1995), and Batman Forever (1995). To add to her bad girl image, she appeared nude in the January 1995 issue of Playboy magazine. In 1996, Drew worked in ScreaIm (1996) and Everyone Says I Love You (1996). She was now moving towards mature roles with the films Best Men (1997), and Wishful Thinking (1997) with Jennifer Beals. Her potential as a leading lady came to be noticed and in 1998 was cast in the films The Wedding Singer with Adam Sandler, Ever After, and Home Fries.

In 1998, Drew also formed Flower Films, a production company leading to more control over her career. She then produced and acted in Never Been Kissed (1999), Charlie's Angels (2000), Donnie Darko (2001), Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003), Duplex (2003) with Ben Stiller, and A Confederacy of Dunces (2004).

On the romantic front also, Drew had lots of ups and downs. In 1994, she married Jeremy Thomas but they split after a month. In 2001, she married Canadian comedian Tom Green and split after five months.
