Biography
Ellen Rona Barkin was born on April 16th, 1952 in Bronx, New York. She has one sibling, a brother and was raised in a Jewish American household. In her teens she attended the prestigious High School of the Performing Arts in Manhattan and went on to attend Hunter College where she studied history and drama.
Her first acting roles were stage plays throughout New York and small roles in soap operas. In 1981 she appeared in Kent State, a made for TV semi-documentary that chronicled the 1970 murders that occurred when students protesting the Vietnam War on campus were shot-down by National Guardsmen. Her first notable film debut came with Diner in 1982. She was noticed for her acting in this film and subsequently was cast in several other films including Tender Mercies in 1983 with Robert Duvall, Harry and Son in 1984, and three films in 1986: Terminal Choice, Down by Law, and Act of Vengeance. Her breakthrough role came in 1987 opposite Dennis Quaid in The Big Easy. The Big Easy was considered one of the best action films of the decade and grossed over seventeen million at the box-office, it also catapulted Barkin and Quaid into international fame and recognition. She has since starred and had roles in over twenty-five films, most notably Sea of Love, Switch, This Boy's Life, The Fan, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Someone Like You and Ocean's Thirteen.
Barkin is admired by fans, critics and colleagues for her versatile acting ability and direct manner. On the personal front she was married to Irish actor Gabriel Byrne from1988 to 1993; the pair had two children together, a son and a daughter. She later married Revlon millionaire Ron Perelman in 2000, but the couple divorced in 2006; they had no children together. Barkin continues to act as well as produce and direct.
