When Vanessa was just thirteen, she recorded her first single titled La Magie Des Surprises-Parties (The Magic of Surprise Parties). However, Vanessa got her first break when her uncle, Didier Pain, who produces records, invited her to sing in the song Joe le Taxi. The song reached the UK Top Ten and Vanessa got her first taste of success. In 1988, Vanessa released her debut album called M & J. It was a great hit in France reaching #13. In 1990, she released Variations Sur Le Mme T'aime, which reached #6 in France. Her next album was the self-titled Vanessa Paradis (1992), which was produced by Lenny Kravitz, her then boyfriend. In 1989, Vanessa made her film debut with Noce Blanche. She played the leading role of Mathilde Tessier, a seventeen-year old with a cynical and clear view of the world who falls in love with her philosophy teacher. She won the 1990 Caesar, the French equivalent of Oscar for her performance. Vanessa waited for a good script rather than plunge into acting head-on. Her next film was Elisa (1995), more than five years since her first film. In the film, she plays the role of Marie who has a tough childhood since her mother commits suicide. She sets out to find her father whom she blames for her mother's death. Following Elisa, Vanessa appeared regularly in several films. These include Un amour de sorcière (1997), Une chance sur deux (1998), the hit black and white romantic movie Fille sur le pont, La (1999), and Mon ange (2004).
