Biography
Elisabeth Shue was born on October 6th, 1963 in Wilimington, Delaware. She grew up in New Jersey in Essex and Bergen counties. Her parents were affluent professionals and Shue enjoyed a financially comfortable childhood. Her parents divorced when she was about nine years old; she and her siblings subsequently got into considerable mischief following the divorce. She attended and graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey. Following graduation from high school she attended the prestigious, all girls, private college, Wellesley, in Massachusetts. She later transferred to another esteemed school, Harvard University, to study political science, but left one semester before graduation to pursue her acting career.
She had appeared in many commercials, but her first major film role came in The Karate Kid, in 1984, as the lead character's girlfriend. A more substantial role came in Adventures In Babysitting. She also had large roles in the second and third Back to the Future films starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. While praised for her acting skills in these films her pivotal role came with the dark and intense Leaving Las Vegas, opposite Nicolas Cage. Both Shue and Cage won high praise for their roles; Shue was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award and Nicolas Cage won an Academy award for Best Actor. The film was a huge critical and box-office success and elevated Shue from being seen as a medium weight supporting actress to a substantial and versatile lead actress.
She followed Leaving Las Vegas with several other films, including: The Saint, Palmetto, Molly, Hollow Man, Hide & Seek and Dreamer. She also returned to Harvard to complete her degree nearly fifteen years after dropping out to pursue her career. She graduated from Harvard with a degree in Government in 2000.
On the personal front Shue married director Davis Guggenheim in 1994. The couple have three children together, a son Miles born in 1997, a daughter Stella born in 2001 and a daughter Agnes born in 2006.
