Uma was born on April 29, 1970 in Boston. Her father is the famous professor of Buddhist studies, Robert F.A. Thurman. Her mother, Nena von Schlebrugge is a model and psychotherapist. From an early age, Uma was interested in acting and left her boarding school when she was 15 to pursue an acting career. In 1987, Uma made her debut in Kiss Daddy Goodnight (1987) as a teen vamp who seduces and robs unsuspecting men. In 1988, she starred in the teen comedy Johnny Be Good. But it was with her role as Cécile de Volanges in Dangerous Liaisons (1988) that she got recognition. In 1990, Uma played the role of Henry Miller's wife in Philip Kaufman's Henry June (1990). The explicit love scenes in the film with Maria de Medeiros got Uma much attention, some of it unwelcome from stalkers. Uma next worked in a string of mediocre films like Robin Hood (1991), Final Analysis (1992), Jennifer 8 (1992), Mad Dog and Glory (1993), and Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1994). It was in 1994 with the Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction that Uma got her much needed break. The film was a huge success and Uma's performance won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Uma next worked in the comedies A Month by the Lake (1995), The Truth About Cats Dogs (1996), and Beautiful Girls (1996). In 1997, she worked in Gattaca opposite Ethan Hawke. She married Hawke in 1998 and they had a daughter later that year. They also have a son born in 2002. However, they split in 2003. After some more flops, Uma came back in 1999 with the widely acclaimed Woody Allen's film Sweet and Lowdown. In 2000, Uma starred in two lavish period dramas, Merchant-Ivory's The Golden Bowl and Roland Joffé's Vatel. Both the films premiered at the Cannes. In 2001, she worked in supporting roles in Tape and husband Hawke's Chelsea Walls. In 2002, Uma worked in the HBO feature Hysterical Blindness as a lovelorn Jersey girl. She was awarded the Best Actress Golden Globe for her role. In 2003, Uma starred in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. She plays the role of top assassin out to take revenge against her former lover and killer who guns her down on her wedding day. Uma apparently learnt martial arts, swordsmanship, and Japanese for the role and received rave reviews. The film with its highly graphic violence was split in two volumes and went on to be a cult classic. Following the success of Kill Bill, Uma became a star and was paid 12.5 million dollars per film. In 2005, she worked in Be Cool, romantic comedy Prime, and the musical comedy remake The Producers but failed to make any impact on the box office. In 2006, Uma starred in My Super Ex-Girlfriend as a super-heroine who takes her revenge on her boyfriend for dumping her.
