Foxy Brown
Biography Foxy Brown is an American rapper and songwriter of Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian descent. She is best known for her albums Ill Na Na (1996), Chyna Doll (1999), and Broken Silence (2001). Originally named Inga Marchand, Foxy was born on September 6, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. As a child, she loved watching blaxploitation films. She chose the title of one such movie as her name. Ever since her childhood, she dreamt of being a rap star. In 1994, Foxy got her first break when she won a talent contest and was asked to sing an LL Cool J song, I Shot Ya on stage in her own style. It became a big hit and she was soon hot property with leading singers asking her to do their remixes. Foxy next worked on the remix of Jay-Z's single, Ain't No Nigga. Jay-Z went on to mentor her. She also featured on the remix of Toni Braxton's You're Makin' Me High, Case's Touch Me, Tease Me, remix of Silk's Hooked On You, and Total's No One Else. She became so popular and so much in demand that a bidding war took place among major labels. Eventually, Def Jam signed her on. In 1996, at the age of 16, Foxy released her debut album Ill Na Na. It debuted at No.7 on the Billboard charts. The album sold more than 1.5 million copies and was certified platinum. It included the hit song Get Me Home featuring Blackstreet. Foxy next joined the rap group The Firm that consisted of rappers AZ, Cormega, and Nas. They released their debut album, The Firm: The Album in 1997. However, the album did not do too well. In 1999, Foxy released her second album, Chyna Doll. The album had collaborations with Total, Eightball, Juvenile, and her mentor, Jigga Man. It entered the Billboard 200 at No.1 but its first single Hot Spot could not even make it to the top 50. The album was certified platinum but fell short of her label's expectations. In 2001, Foxy released her third album, Broken Silence. It included the songs BK Anthem, Na Na Be Like, and Oh Yeah. The album was not promoted much by her label and didn't sell too well and was certified gold. However, it was critically acclaimed and in 2002, her single Na Na Be Like got her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Rap Solo Performance. In 2003, Foxy left Def Jam and in 2004, Jay-Z signed her to Roc-A-Fella Records. She then started working on her fourth album, Black Roses. However, in 2005, she lost her hearing completely due to sensorineural hearing loss. She had surgery in 2006 and was able to recover 100% of her hearing. Now that she has regained her hearing, we can expect to hear more of and from her.
