Videos more videos Biography Cristiano Ronaldo is a Portuguese football player, who plays for Manchester United and Portugal. His claim to fame is that he became a teenage millionaire and the most expensive teenager when Sporting Lisbon transferred him for £12.24 million (approximately $22 million). Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal on 5 February 1985 to Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro and José Dinis Aveiro. His father named him after former US president Ronald Reagan as he was his favorite actor. But it was football that was Ronaldo's passion. He started kicking football when he was just three. When he was just eight years old, he played for Andorinha, an amateur team where his father worked as a kit man. When he was just ten, he signed for Nacional. By the age of 12, Ronaldo was the best player in Madeira. He next went on to play for the club Sporting Lisbon and shifted to Lisbon. Ronaldo soon started getting a huge fan following with his superb game. In his first match itself, he scored two goals against Moreirense. There was no stopping Ronaldo. He became the only Sporting player to play for the Under-18, Under-21, B team, and first team in one season. It was not long before European clubs started noticing this young talent. A friendly match against Manchester United got him his big break. Sporting beat Manchester United 3-1 and it couldn't have been possible without Ronaldo. Manchester United was now very much interested in signing Ronaldo, and it sure did, for a whopping £12.24 million. And Ronaldo didn't let them down. In his first match for Manchester United, he helped his team score three goals and won the Man of the Match Award. Ronaldo was thirsty for more. His form was so consistent that he won the Man of the Match Award again and again in many matches. During his first season in 2003, Ronaldo helped Manchester United win the FA Cup by scoring a goal. With this feat, Ronaldo came to be known worldwide. To top his success with Manchester United, Ronaldo represented his country Portugal at the Euro 2004 championships. Portugal reached the finals of Euro 2004 but lost to Greece. At the 2006 World Cup, Ronaldo's first World Cup goal came from a penalty kick and was against Iran. It is alleged that Ronaldo influenced the red card for Wayne Rooney in the match against England. Portugal eventually won the game and England was eliminated from the World Cup. Ronaldo received bad press in England, which led him to consider leaving Manchester United. However, he was urged by the management and Rooney to stay on. Portugal lost to France in the semifinals of the World Cup but Ronaldo became a big football star.
