Videos more videos Biography Zac Efron or Zachary David Alexander Efron is an American television actor and singer known for his roles in Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical and the television series Summerland. Efron was born on October 18, 1987 in San Luis Obispo, California. His father, David Efron is an electrical engineer and his mother, Starla Baskett was formerly a secretary. As a child he showed a keen interest in singing and his parents encouraged him by enrolling him for singing lessons when he was 11 years old. This soon resulted in his performing in the musical Gypsy. The musical had him doing 90 performances and he went on to work in theatre productions of Peter Pan, Little Shop of Horrors, The Music Man, and Mame. In 2002, Efron made his television debut with a guest role in the television series, Firefly. This was followed by more such roles in ER and The Guardian. Efron got his big break with the television series Summerland playing Cameron Bale. In the first season he appeared as a guest star, but in the second season he became part of the regular cast. Following Summerland, Efron appeared in guest roles on CSI: Miami, NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. In 2003, at the age of 15, Efron was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Supporting Performance for his role in the Lifetime original TV film Miracle Run. He portrays the role of Steven Morgan, one of two autistic twins, who wins a cross country race with his mother's support. In 2005, Efron had a main role in the music video of Hope Partlow's Sick Inside. Efron came into the big league when he starred in High School Musical (2006) along with Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, and Corbin Bleu. He plays the role of basketball-enthusiast Troy Bolton who meets a girl, Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) at a karoke contest and falls in love. His singing and acting talents made him a star among teenage audiences. The tracks from the film were huge hits. These include the songs Get'cha Head In the Game, Breaking Free, which is a duet with Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Start of Something New, What I've Been Looking For: Reprise, and We're all in this Together. Breaking Free made it from #86 to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in two weeks making it the fastest climb in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. This new found stardom led to Efron's casting as Link Larkin in the film version of the Broadway musical Hairspray, starring John Travolta, Amanda Bynes, and Queen Latifah. This could just be the beginning for the multi-talented young star.
