Biography

Michelle Wie is a professional American golfer of Korean origin. She is known for her long drives and for being the youngest person to win a USGA event for adults.

Michelle Wie was born on October 11, 1989 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She started playing golf when she was just four years old and her father, B.J. Wie became her teacher. In 1999, when Michelle was just ten years old, she shot 64 in 18 holes. That year, she also qualified for at the USGA's Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. She thus became the youngest player ever to qualify for a USGA amateur championship event. In 2002, when she was 12, Michelle Wie won two local tournaments and broke another record by becoming the youngest woman to qualify for an LPGA event. She also reached the semifinals of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship that year.

In 2003, Michelle Wie won the Women's Amateur Public Links tournament and broke yet another record. She became the youngest person ever to win a USGA event for adults.

In 2004, Michelle Wie made headlines when she became the youngest player and the fourth woman to ever play on the PGA tour by qualifying for the Sony Open. She missed the cut by a shot but made history anyways. That year, she was also selected for the US Golf team, which went on to win the 2004 Curtis Cup. She was again the youngest person ever to be selected for the US team.

In 2005, Michelle Wie missed the cut again in the Sony Open in Hawaii on the PGA Tour. On the LPGA Tour, she finished second at SBS Open. She tied for first place for the U.S. Amateur Public Links and became the first female golfer to qualify for a USGA national men's tournament. She however didn't do well at the 2005 U.S. Women's Open. She also made her third attempt to make the cut at a PGA Tour event when she played in the John Deere Classic. Unfortunately, she missed the cut again by two strokes.

In October 2005, just before turning 16, Michelle Wie announced that she was turning professional and reportedly signed sponsorship deals with Nike and Sony worth more than ten million dollars a year. She also announced a donation of $500,000 for Hurricane Katrina relief.

As a professional, Michelle Wie played her first event in the limited-field Samsung World Championship. She was however disqualified from this LPGA event for making an illegal drop that was not reported in the scorecard.

In her second professional event at the 2005 Casio World Open on the Japan Golf Tour, Michelle Wie shot four over par and missed the cut. In January 2006, she tried her luck again on the PGA tour at the Sony Open in Hawaii but missed the cut again, this time by seven strokes.

In May 2006, Michelle Wie became the second woman to make the cut at a men's tournament in South Korea. She reportedly received $700,000 for competing in the event while it's total prize money was just $600,000. At a young age, Michelle Wei has managed to become a celebrity in the golfing world and is destined to go a long way.
