Biography
Eva Green is a French-born actress. She is best known for her role as a Bond girl in the film Casino Royale (2006). She is also known for her role as Isabelle in the film The Dreamers (2003).
Eva Gaëlle Green was born on July 5, 1980 in Paris, France. Her mother, Marlène Jobert is a French actress. Her father, Walter Green, is a dentist and has also tried acting in Au hasard Balthazar (1996). Eva has a fraternal twin sister, Joy. With acting in her genes, it was but natural to assume that her mother must have encouraged Eva to act. However, Marlène thought acting would be too tough on her fragile daughter. Eva fortunately thought otherwise and went on to develop her acting genes by studying acting in Paris for three years. She followed this up with a course at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England.
In 2001, Eva made her acting debut with her role as Iris in the play Jalousie En Trois Fax. She was critically acclaimed for her performance and also received a nomination for Les Molières in the category Révélation Théâtrale Féminine. She followed this up with a role in the play Tucaret.
Eva's stage performances caught the eye of noted director Bernardo Bertolucci who gave Eva her first break. In 2003, Eva made her film debut as Isabelle in Bertolucci's The Dreamers co-starring Michael Pitt and Louis Garrel. This film about the near incestuous relationship between a twin brother and sister saw her in a nude scene. Her acting as well as her nudity saw her gaining popularity. Eva also composed music for the film and recorded several tracks.
In 2004, Eva played the role of Countess Clarisse de Dreux-Sobise in the low-profile French film Arsene Lupin directed by Jean-Paul Salomé and starring Romain Duris and Kristin Scott Thomas. She received mixed reviews for her performance.
In 2005, Eva starred in Ridley Scott's film Kingdom of Heaven. She played the role of Sibylla, the sister of leprosy-afflicted King Baldwin IV, who marries the intimidating Guy de Lusignan played by Martin Csokas, but falls in love with a blacksmith Balian played by Orlando Bloom. Eva later went on to date Martin Csokas in real life. In 2006, Eva got her big break when she played the role of British agent Vesper Lynd in the James Bond film Casino Royale. The film is an adaptation of Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel and stars the new James Bond actor Daniel Craig. With this role, Eva has become the fifth French actress to be a Bond girl after Claudine Auger in Thunderball (1965), Corinne Clery in Moonraker (1979), Carole Bouquet in For Your Eyes Only (1981) and Sophie Marceau in The World Is Not Enough (1999). This role will hopefully launch her to stardom too.
