Biography

Brandon Routh is an American actor known best for his role as Superman in Superman Returns (2006).

Brandon James Routh was born on October 9, 1979 in Norwalk, Iowa. His mother, Katie is a teacher and father, Ron is a carpenter. Both his parents liked playing music in their spare time imbibing a love of the arts in Brandon and his sister, Sara. Brandon was a regular boy in his childhood. He loved playing sports and also took part in music and theatre at the Norwalk Theater of the Performing Arts. It was here that he discovered his love of acting but did not pursue it actively because of his small-town background.

Brandon attended the University of Iowa to study English and be a writer. While at the university, he took up modeling and acting for his tuition fee. He was often told that he had an uncanny resemblance to Christopher Reeve who had played Superman before. Within a year, Brandon was lured into pursuing an acting career seriously and left the University.

Brandon then shifted to New York and later to Los Angeles. In 1999, he played his first major role in an episode of the ABC television series, Odd Man Out. In 2000, he landed a role on the third season of MTV's nighttime soap opera, Undressed. He worked in the series for four episodes. Routh was then seen on Gilmore Girls in a minor role as an attendee of a Bangles concert in the February 2001 episode, Concert Interupptus. In May 2001, he landed a year-long role as Seth Anderson in the soap opera One Life to Live. He worked in the soap opera till April 17, 2002.

Over the next few years, Brandon worked in single-episode roles and guest appearances in popular shows such as Cold Case (2003) on CBS, Will & Grace (2004) on NBC, and Oliver Beene (2004) on FOX. During this period of struggle, Brandon worked as a bartender at Lucky Strike Lanes, a popular bowling alley in Hollywood, and shared an apartment with his sister, Sara. It was while working at Lucky Strike that he met actress Courtney Ford to whom he got engaged to in 2006. They also worked together in a short film, Denial (2006).

In 2004, Brandon auditioned for the role he was destined for-Superman. Many actors including Nicolas Cage, Josh Hartnett, Brendan Fraser, Paul Walker, James Marsden, and Ashton Kutcher were considered for this coveted role. However, director Bryan Singer wanted a fresh face and he was impressed by Brandon's close resemblance to Christopher Reeve-the most popular Superman and signed him on for the film Superman Returns. Brandon became a celebrity overnight. When the film was released in 2006, it received positive reviews and was a commercial success. The Superman Brandon is here to stay.
