Biography

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents are both African American, she was also Native American. She grew up in Detroit and attended Detroit High School of Fine and Performing Arts. She died at the age of twenty-two on August 25, 2001 in a controversial plane crash on her way to Miami. Her parents later filed a wrongful death suit against the airline for negligence and settled for an undisclosed amount. In her short life time she was a singer, dancer, model and actress. She signed a recording contract with Barry Hankerson's Blackground label in 1993. Incidentally, Barry Hankerson was her uncle. Her first CD Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, was released in 1994. The album went platinum within months.

Before her death she recorded many hit records, including five number one rhythm and blues songs, one number one pop hit, and seven top ten singles on the Billboard. She sold over twenty-four million records worldwide during her short career. She also modeled for Tommy Hilfiger and starred in two motion pictures before her death.

In 1996 she recorded One in a Million. It was Aaliyah's sophomore album; it was written and produced by Missy Elliott and Timothy Mosley. It was a huge success and she received enormous critical and fan attention from the CD. In 1998 her song Are You that Somebody went number one in the United States.

Tommy Hilfiger liked her look and signed her for her first endorsement deal. She participated in print campaigns, runway shows, and a commercial. In 2000, she co-starred with Jet Li in the martial-arts film Romeo Must Die, which debuted at number two at the box office. In 2001, Aaliyah went to Australia to co-star with Stuart Townsend in the film Queen of the Damned, which was a screen play adaptation of Anne Rice's novel.

Ion August 25, 2001 at 6:45 PM she boarded a Cessana 402 to travel with seven friends to Miami which should have taken one hour via air flight. The plane crashed during take off and landed in a marsh on the south side of the departure end of runway 27. All nine people aboard, including Aaliyah, the pilot and the other seven passengers, were killed. She is in a private room in the Rosewood Mausoleum at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.
