Biography
Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano was born on September 15th, 1972 in Oviedo, Spain. She is the oldest daughter of Jesus Ortix Alvarez a renowned Spanish journalist and Paloma Rocasolano Rodriguez a nurse. Her parents divorced when she was fifteen and her father re-married. His new wife is journalist Ana Togores. She has two younger sisters, Telma and Erika. Letizia attended the La Gesta School in Oviedo before re-locating to Madrid. She later attended Ramiro de Maeztu High School. She went on to earn a BA in Journalism at the University of Madrid and a Master's Degree in Audiovisual Journalism at the Institute for Studies in Audiovisual Journalism.
After college she moved to Mexico and worked for Siglo XXI. She later returned to Spain and worked for a Spanish version of Bloomberg and then moved on to CNN Plus. She also worked for News Channel 24 and Telediario Matinal on TVE. She was later promoted to anchor of the TVE evening news Telediario. She has been involved in many interesting news stories throughout the years and reported on the 2000 American presidential elections, the war in Iraq, and the New York 9/11 Twin Towers tragedy.
On the personal front she was married to Alonso Guerrero Perez, her former high-school literature teacher in 1999. The couple divorced in 2000 after a ten year relationship. Three years later it was publicly announced that she would be marrying Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias, who is the direct heir to the Spanish throne. The pair married on May 22, 2004 in Madrid, Spain. The journalist and the Prince fell in love while they were both in Northern Spain. She was sent to cover the sinking of the Prestige and he had appeared there to offer support to the devastated communities surrounding the tanker spill area. Although they had met once previously they did not start dating until the "Prestige" meeting. The relationship remained a secret for many months before the announcement of their engagement and marriage.
In October of 2005 Princess Letizia gave birth to a baby girl, Her Royal Highness, Infanta Leonor. The child was baptized on January 14th, 2006. The godparents were the King and Queen of Spain. It is presumed that a reform will take place in Spain, as it has in other countries, that would give a firstborn daughter equal right to the throne over a first born son. If this law passes Leonor would be second in line, after her father, for the throne of Spain.
