Biography

Catherine Bell is an American actress born in England of Scottish and Iranian descent. She is best known for her role as Lt. Col. Sarah MacKenzie in the popular television series JAG (1997 to 2005).

Catherine Lisa Bell was born on August 14, 1968 in London. Her father is Scottish and her mother is an Iranian. Her parents got divorced when she was just a baby and her mother then shifted to Los Angeles. She joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) to be a biomedical engineer or a doctor but instead quit studies to be a full-time model.

Catherine next went to Japan for several months on a modeling assignment. However, she felt she was too shy and took acting classes to overcome her shyness. It was not long before she decided to pursue a career in acting. After several years of auditions, Catherine finally saw some light at the end of the tunnel when she landed guest roles in the television series Dream On (1994), Friends (1995) as a woman with a baby on the bus, Hot Line (1996), and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1997).

Meanwhile, Catherine also ventured into films. In 1992, she acted as Isabella Rossellini's body double in Death Becomes Her. On the sets of the film, she met her future husband, Adam Beason who was the director's assistant.

Catherine also acted in the films Men of War (1994), Crash Dive (1997) and Black Thunder (1997). She also acted in the television films Mother of the Bride (1993) and Alien Nation: Body and Soul (1995).

In 1997, Catherine got her big break when she was cast in the lead role as Major/Lt. Colonel Sarah "Mac" Mackenzie in the popular series JAG. However, before landing this role, she was cast as Lt. Dianne Schonke in the first season of the series. After just a few appearances, her character was killed off, but impressed with her performance; the executive producer and creator of the series cast her as the female lead. She played the role till 2005 when the series was taken off the air.

In 1998, Catherine did a regular role in the television series Sin City Spectacular. That year, she also starred in the film Cab to Canada. The next year, she starred in the film The Time Shifters (1999).

For her role in the miniseries, she received a nomination in the 2006 Saturn Award of Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for Best Supporting Actress on Television.

On the personal front, Catherine married Adam Beason in 1994. The couple has one daughter, Gemma (born on 16 April, 2003).
