She is the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam event, the first to win a WTA singles title, and the first to win a junior Grand Slam title. Her other achievements include beating two top 10 players and making it to the WTA's Top 50 rankings. Sania Mirza was born on November 15, 1986 in Mumbai, India and currently stays in Hyderabad. When Sania was just six years old, her father started teaching her to play tennis in her summer holidays. She loved it so much that it became more than just a pastime. She soon got a coach and worked harder to make a career out of it. This meant missing out on the little joys of childhood, but Sania was determined to make it big. In 2003, Sania became a professional. Her sacrifices paid off soon when she won Wimbledon Championships Girls' doubles title with Alisa Kleybanova. She also ended making history becoming the first Indian woman to win a junior Grand Slam title. In 2004, back home in Hyderabad, Sania made history again when she won the doubles title at the Hyderabad Open with Liezel Huber. With this victory, she became the youngest Indian to win a WTA or ATP tour title and the first Indian woman to win a WTA title event. She was awarded the prestigious Arjuna award by the government of India in recognition of her outstanding achievement in sport. In 2005, Sania played in her first Grand Slam event at the Australian Open. She reached the third round and became the first Indian woman to do so. In the third round, eventual winner Serena Williams beat her. However, at the 2005 Hyderabad Open, Sania won the final 6-4, 5-7 and 6-3 against Ukrainian Alyona Bondarenko. With this win, she became the first Indian woman ever to win a WTA singles title. Sania next followed up this achievement with an impressive run at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where reached the quarterfinals and also beat former U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova along the way. Sania, next reached the third round at the Acura Classic, beating Nadia Petrova in the second round. Her second round victory as well as her performance during the year helped her make it to the top 50 world rankings for the first time in her career. It was also the first time for an Indian woman. Sania topped this up by reaching the final in the Forest Hills Women's Tennis Classic. At the U.S. Open that year she reached the fourth round where the top seed Maria Sharapova beat her. With this, she became the first Indian woman to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam event. Sania's doubles career also took off well. She reached the semi-finals of the 2005 Japan Open in the singles and doubles events. Her doubles ranking improved to 114. In 2006, Sania again teamed up with Liezel Huber to win the doubles title at the 2006 Bangalore Open, which was Hyderabad Open previously. With her achievements and her attitude, Sania is constantly in the media. She is also seen in many commercials.
