Biography

Tarkan is a Turkish pop singer. He is best known for his hit song Simarik (1999) and Şıkıdım (Shake). He is also known as the Turkish Prince of Pop.

Tarkan Tevetoğlu was born on October 17, 1972 in Alzey, Germany. He was named after a popular comic character in the 1960s. His father was a Turkish immigrant in West Germany who had gone there during the West German economic boom. In 1986, when Trakan was 13, his father decided to shift with his family back to Turkey. Tarkan started studying music in Karamürsel. In 1988, his family shifted to Istanbul and he started preparing for University entrance exams in 1990. He wanted to go back to Germany because he was having a tough time in Istanbul.

However, destiny had other plans for him. His life changed when he met Mehmet Söğütoğlu, the chairman of the record company Istanbul Plak. It was not long before Tarkan released his debut album Yine Sensiz (Without You Again). The album produced by Söğütoğlu sold around 750 thousand copies. Soon after, his second album A-Acayipsin (Oh - You're Something Else) was released which sold more than two million copies in Turkey and 750 thousand copies in Europe, a feat that was never achieved by a Turkish performer. Overnight, life changed for Tarkan and he became a star.

In 1994, Tarkan shifted to New York to get away from the constant attention of his adoring fans and to finish his studies at a college there.

While studying English in the US, Tarkan met the Turkish founder of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegün. Ertegün encouraged him to launch his music career in the US.

In July 1997, Tarkan released the album Ölürüm Sana (I'd Die For You) on which he worked for three years. It included the hit song Şımarık. For the album, Tarkan collaborated with Sezen Aksu and Ozan Çolakoglu. The album was first rleased in Turkey and sold around 4.5 million copies. He also won the Turkish TV Kral music award for his song Şımarık.

Following this astronomical success, Tarkan released the single Şımarık in Europe in 1999. It was highly popular in clubs and reached number three in Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, and Germany. It topped the charts in Belgium. At the Cannes Midem Awards, he was presented his gold disc.

Soon after, Tarkan released an album for Europe called Tarkan. It was also a big hit and he won a World Music Award in Monaco. He then released two more singles in Europe, Şıkıdım and Bu Gece (Tonight). He also toured Europe and Latin America to promote his music.

In 2000, Tarkan ventured into the American market and released the album, Tarkan. It was a huge hit and the album was certified platinum. In 2001, Tarkan released the album Karma in Turkey. It included the singles Kuzu Kuzu (Like A Lamb) and Hüp (Whoop).

In 2003, Tarkan released his EP/hybrid album Dudu (Woman) under his own label HITT Music. It sold over a million copies.

In October 2005, Tarkan released his first English language single Bounce in Turkey. This was followed by the release of his English language album Come Closer in parts of Europe in April 2006.
