Amelie Mauresmo is a French professional tennis player and a former World No.1 tennis player. She is best known for winning two Grand Slam singles titles in 2006, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Amélie Simone Mauresmo was born on 5 July 1979 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France. When she was just four, she started playing tennis after watching Yannick Noah win the 1983 French Open on television.

In 1994, Amelie turned pro and in 1996, at the age of 17, she won the junior French Open and Wimbledon titles and was named 1996 Junior World Champion by the International Tennis Federation.

In 1999, Amelie broke into the spotlight when she defeated three seeded players including World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport en route to the Australian Open final where she lost to the World No. 2 Martina Hingis. However, that year, she managed to beat Hingis in the Paris [Indoors] event.

In 2003, Amelie led her team to victory at the Fed Cup. The next year, she won a silver medal for her country at the Olympics in Athens losing to Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne in the women's singles final.

On September 13, 2004, Amelie became the World No.1 and also the first French tennis player to do so. She achieved the No.1 ranking without winning any Grand Slam titles. She stayed at the top for five weeks. That year, she reached the semifinals at Wimbledon.

In 2005, Amelie won her first WTA Tour Championships. That year, she also made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon.

In January 2006, Amelie won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open defeating Belgian former world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final. Amelie was leading by 6-1, 2-0 when Justine retired from the match suffering from gastroenteritis.

In March 2006, Amelie regained her No.1 ranking. At the French Open that year, she couldn't live up to her country's expectations and lost in the fourth round. However, at the 2006 Wimbledon, she won the title beating Maria Sharapova in the semifinals and Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. At the US Open, she lost to Maria Sharapova in the semifinal 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. She went on to make it to the finals of the WTA Season-Ending Championships in Madrid, but lost to Justine Henin-Hardenne. She finished that year at No. 3 behind Henin-Hardenne and Maria Sharapova.

On the personal front, Amelie is a lesbian and revealed this fact in 1999.

Amelie has achieved a lot that few women of her country have ever done.
