Videos more videos      Biography Charlize Theron is a model-turned Oscar winning actress. She is best-known for her award winning performance in Monster (2003). Charlize was born on August 7, 1975 in Benoni, South Africa. Her father, Charles was of French Huguenot descent and ran the family's construction business. Her German mother Gerda took over the business in 1991 after Charles' death. Gerda shot Charles in self-defense when he attacked her in a drunken state. Soon, Charlize who was trained as a ballet dancer went to Milan to become a model. After a year, she gave up modeling and moved to New York to study ballet at the Joffrey Ballet School. Sadly, she suffered a knee injury that put a halt to her dreams. Charlize then shifted to Los Angeles to try out acting. Charlize got her first break in an unconventional manner. She was discovered by a talent scout when she was arguing with the bank manager who refused to cash her check. She soon made her debut with a small role in the film Children of the Corn III (1994). However, it was with the film 2 Days in the Valley (1996) that Charlize was noticed for her acting skills. She soon got her first leading role opposite Keanu Reeves in The Devil's Advocate (1997). It was not long before she became a star with successful films like the Oscar-winning film The Cider House Rules (1999) opposite Michael Caine and Tobey Maguire and Mighty Joe Young (1998). Her celebrity status was acknowledged when she was cast in Woody Allen's Celebrity (1998) along with stars like Winona Ryder and Leonardo DiCaprio. Charlize then worked in a string of high-profile but unsuccessful films like Reindeer Games (2000), The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000), Sweet November (2001), and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001). She won the Razzie Award nomination for Worst Actress for her role in Sweet November. The year 2003 was a good year for Charlize. She was cast in the star-studded hit comedy The Italian Job with Mark Wahlberg and Edward Norton. That same year, Charlize gave a stunning performance as a serial killer and prostitute Aileen Wuornos in Monster co-starring Christina Ricci as Wuornos' lover. For the role, Charlize completely altered her look and won many awards for the role, not to mention the Oscar for the Best Actress. The year 2005 was a mixed year for Charlize. She starred in Aeon Flux, which was unsuccessful both with critics and audiences. She then went on to give an astounding performance in the docudrama North Country. She portrayed a woman who successfully fights sexual harassment. She was nominated for the Oscar for her performance. There are bound to be many more awards for this talented beauty.
