Biography
Kate Beckinsale is an English actress. She is known best for her roles in Pearl Harbor, Underworld, and The Aviator.
Kate Beckinsale was born on July 26, 1973 in London, UK to television actors Richard Beckinsale and Judy Loe. Her father who was quite well-known died in 1979 when Kate was just six. As a child, Kate was multi-talented and won many writing competitions. However, it was acting that interested her the most.
In 1991, at the age of 18, Kate made her acting debut with a role in the television film about World War II, One Against the Wind. This was followed by a role in a corporate film about industrial accidents.
Kate went on to do her degree in French and Russian literature at New College, Oxford University. She chose this field because she felt a background in foreign language and literature would expand her range of roles.
In the first year of her college itself, she landed a role in Kenneth Branagh's film, Much Ado About Nothing, based on the play of the same name by William Shakespeare. She studied for some time in Paris, after which she dropped out of the university to focus on her acting career. She was next seen in some low-profile films, such as Shooting Fish (1998) and The Last Days of Disco (1998). She also worked in a few television films and stage plays during this time.
Kate dated Welsh actor Michael Sheen for a long time and the two have a daughter, Lily Mo Sheen born in 1999. However, the two separated in 2003.
In 1999, Kate appeared in her first significant American film, Brokedown Palace (1999), in which she costarred with Claire Danes. However, it did not do well commercially. She next starred in James Ivory's film, The Golden Bowl (2000).
However, it was in 2001 that she got her big break when she was cast opposite Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett in the film, Pearl Harbor. The film went on to be one of the highest grossing films that year. Kate had reached star status in Hollywood and went on to do a series of high-profile films in Hollywood, such as Serendipity (2001), Underworld (2003) along with Michael Sheen, and Van Helsing (2004). She also gave a noteworthy performance as Ava Gardner in The Aviator. She apparently gained 20 pounds for the role.
In 2003, a few months after separating from Sheen, Kate got engaged to Len Wiseman, the director of Underworld and they got married in 2004.
In 2006, Kate enacted the role of a vampire in the film Underworld: Evolution, a sequel to Underworld. The film was a huge hit commercially making over $26 million in its first weekend of release. She also worked in the comedy, Click starring Adam Sandler.
