Biography Melissa Joan Hart is an American actress. She is best known for playing the title roles in successful television series Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. Melissa Joan Catherine Hart was born on April 18, 1976 at Smithtown, New York, on Long Island. She is the eldest among three sisters, three half-sisters, and one brother. Many members of her family including her stepfather, sisters Trisha Hart, Elizabeth, and Emily, brother Brian, and half-sister Alexandra Hart-Gilliams are part of the show business in one form or another. Melissa's career started as baby model. Her first television commercial was for a bathtub toy called Splashy. By the time Melissa turned five, she had already appeared in 25 commercials. She also played small roles for the miniseries Kane & Abel (1985) and The Equalizer (1986). She also played the lead role alongside Katherine Helmond in the Emmy Award-winning TV movie Christmas Snow (1986). In 1989, Melissa ventured into theatre and became an understudy to three of the young girls in the play, The Crucible, starring Martin Sheen. The exposure from this venture helped her grab the first of her popular roles. She was selected for the title role in the Nickelodeon TV series Clarissa Explains It All. The show was hugely popular and brought her four consecutive Young Artist Award nominations. She won three of them. When the series ended, Melissa joined the New York University to pursue her studies. However, she soon got the lead role for the movie Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (1995) and had to quit studies. The success of the movie led to the launch of the popular television series by the same name. The series ran for seven seasons. In 1998, Hart appeared in a small part in the movie Can't Hardly Wait. She also appeared in Drive Me Crazy. In 1999, Melissa became the center of a much-publicized controversy. She had appeared in the October 1999 issue of the men's magazine Maxim in revealing pictorials. Similar pictorials were also included in Bikini and Movieline magazines. This upset Archie Comics, the copyright holders of the Sabrina franchise, because the series was being promoted as a show for children and pre-teens. Archie Comics felt that Melissa's revealing images hurt the show's wholesome image. The issue was resolved in the end and Melissa was let off without her having to apologize or being fired. Melissa married musician Mark Wilkerson-member of the band Course of Nature-in 2003. Their baby boy, Mason Walter Wilkerson, was born on January 11, 2006. Melissa's mother has been her agent from the very beginning of her career. Together Melissa and her mother co-own their production company, Hartbreak Films. Though Melissa thus far hasn't been successful in movies, her slow transition from a TV sensation to movie stardom is already beginning to take shape.
