Biography

Robbie Williams is a British pop singer who was formerly with the popular boy band, Take That. Apart from good looks, he is known for his controversial videos and hit songs, Angels, Millennium, Rock DJ, She's The One, and Kids.

Born, Robert Peter Williams on February 13th, 1974 in a small town, Stoke-on-Tent in North England, young Robbie always had the entertaining streak in him. At St. Margaret Ward High School, he loved being the class clown rather than studying. He wanted to become an actor and joined a local theater company. He even landed minor roles in musical plays such as Fiddler on the Roof and Oliver. He also appeared in the soap opera Brookside.

It was his mother who helped him get his break with the boy band, Take That. She saw the advertisement for auditioning potential members of the band and persuaded Williams to give it a try. In 1990, Williams, who was just 16 years at that time became a part of Take That. The band went on to be a pop phenomenon in the UK as well as in the US.

However, after five years in 1995, he broke away from the band to pursue a career as a solo artist; his strong personality didn't really seem to gel with that of the boy band. There was some speculation that he was fired from the band due to his wayward ways.

It was some time before Williams released his first single, Freedom '90 in late 1996. It was a disaster, but his next single, Old Before I Die in 1997 received moderate success. His first solo album, Life Thru a Lens, followed soon after. The single, Angels, from this album, was a big hit in the UK and made Williams a star.

In 1998, Williams made it big with the release of his second album, I've Been Expecting You. In 1999, he released the album The Ego Has Landed in the US. He followed it up with the single, Millennium, a Top 10 hit in North America. This was followed by the release of the songs No Regrets, Strong, and the hit, She's The One. Robbie took to the stage and worldwide tours for some time before releasing the album Sing When You're Winning in late 2000. He gained international popularity with the controversial video, Rock DJ and the single Kids featuring Kylie Minogue.

At the 2001 Brit Awards, Williams received a record-breaking 12 awards, including Best British Male Artist and Best British Single and Video for Rock DJ.

In 2002, Williams signed an £80 million contract with EMI. His next album, Escapology, sold millions of copies in Europe but didn't click in the US.

His next album, Intensive Care, followed in 2005. Through the lyrics of its songs, Williams apparently takes stock of his life. During the album launch, Williams proclaimed himself the new "King of Pop".

Williams has been the talk of the town with his womanizing ways. He is known to love himself and his success obviously gives him enough grounds to have a super ego.
