Biography

Mya Harrison is a dancer and singer of African-American and Italian ancestry. She is best known for her soulful R&B songs such as Ghetto Supastar.

Mya Marie Harrison was born on October 10, 1979 in Washington, D.C. Her father is African-American and her mother, Italian. Mya has music in her genes-her father was a performer in R&B bands.

Mya as a child loved dancing and took dance lessons. At the age of 8, she lost interest in the art and took up violin lessons instead. She returned to her first love in 1992 when she saw herself dancing in some old tapes. She then joined the dance troupe Tappers With Attitude (T.W.A.). She soon left the troupe and headed to New York to study dance with Savion Glover, known for his choreography of the Broadway hit Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk. Impressed with her dedication and talent, Glover gave her a chance to perform solo at the Kennedy Center. Mya started teaching dance since the age of 14.

But it was her father who helped her get a break in the music world. Impressed with her singing talent, he guided her in recording her demo tapes and perfecting her vocals. He then took her demo tapes to a club where he was performing. Luckily, Haqq Islam, CEO of University Music was present there and he took the tapes to him. Haqq Islam took a live audition at Mya's house and Mya got her first record contract with Interscope Records.

For the next two years, Mya worked with Interscope Records on her self-titled debut album, which was released in 1998. It featured an interesting list of collaborators, such as Babyface, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and Dru Hill. The album went platinum and has hits like It's All About Me (featuring Sisqo) and Movin' On". Meanwhile, Mya collaborated with Pras and Ol' Dirty Bastard for Ghetto Supastar which took her popularity to new heights.

In 2000, Mya came up with her second album, Fear of Flying. This mature album featured Mya in a new role as a songwriter.

Mya is popular on the tour circuit not only for her dancing moves and her talent as a singer, but also for great presence and charisma.

Mya has also sung on the Lilith Fair, along with artists such as Jewel, Lisa Loeb, and Sarah McLachlan. Mya also has other talents-she even designs clothes. She was a spokesperson for Bongo jeans. She is also in a program called Secret to Self Esteem that focuses on teen issues.

Mya has gained attention and many fans with her melodious songs and made herself distinct by staying away from the stale mainstream pop songs.
