She is one of the most successful Latin singers who made a name for herself not just in Latin America but also worldwide. She is best-known for her hip-shaking belly dancing moves and hit songs such as such as Estoy Aquí, Tu, Ojos Así, Whenever, Wherever, Underneath Your Clothes, La Tortura, and Hips Don't Lie. Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. She is the youngest among eight children. Her mother is a Colombian and her father is an American of Lebanese descent, and Shakira as a child was influenced by both cultures. Her talent was undeniable and she started writing and composing songs from the young age of eight. By the time she was ten, she had started taking part in local competitions and events. She started learning guitar when she was 11. In 1991, when she was just 14, Shakira released her debut album Magia (Magic) with Sony Colombia. The album was a collection of songs written by her since the age of eight. The album didn't do well selling less than 1000 copies. In 1993, she released her second album, Peligro (Danger). However, she wasn't happy with the output and took a break and finished school. In 1995, a more mature and assertive Shakira released her third album, Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet), with a fusion of rock n roll and Arabic music. It became a great success selling more than four million copies due to the singles Estoy Aqui and Donde Estas Corazon. Shakira became a huge star in Latin America and went on a highly successful two-year international tour. However, fame in the US still evaded her. In 1998, Shakira crossed this milestone with the release of her fourth album, Donde Estan Los Ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?), produced by Emilio Estefan, Gloria's husband. The album with the hit single Ojos Así went multi-platinum in U.S., Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Central America, and Mexico. Riding on the wave of her success, Shakira decided to crossover to creating songs in the English language. This resulted in her first English album, Laundry Service (2001). It included the hits Whenever, Wherever and Underneath Your Clothes. These songs along with the video of Whenever, Wherever featuring the belly dancing moves of Shakira made the album a huge success selling more than 13 million copies worldwide. Shakira had now won over millions of fans in the US and all over the world. In 2005, Shakira released Fijación Oral Vol. 1 with the hit single La Tortura. This was followed by her second English album, Oral Fixation Vol. 2. It included the hit single Hips Don't Lie (featuring Wyclef Jean) that went on to reach #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. Shakira is on her way to topping all popularity charts.
