Biography
Jewel Kilcher was born on May 23rd, 1974 in Payson, Utah. She was raised in Homer, Alaska. Her parents are both German and moved to the United States from Switzerland. Both her mother and father were singers and songwriters and she began performing with them when she was six years. When her parents divorced she lived with her father and continued to perform with him in local bars and taverns. She earned a scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan majoring in Operatic Voice; this was where she learned to master the guitar. She began writing songs at age seventeen and decided to become a professional musician.
The story of her living in her Volkswagen van with her mother is now as famous as the singer is herself. She struggled with poverty and traveled the country playing in local venues. She made her way to San Diego, California where she began playing in the popular Innerchange Coffeehouse. She soon gained a following of avid fans of her music and singing style. She was discovered by Atlantic Records at the Coffeehouse and her debut album, Pieces of You was released in 1995. While the album did not initially do well, it slowly gained momentum and ended up staying on the Billboard 200 for a full two years. The album subsequently sold over 12 million copies in the United States and went Platinum eleven times. She later went on to release several other albums including: Spirit in 1998, This Way in 2001, 0304 in 2003 and Goodbye Alice in Wonderland in 2006.
Jewel has turned much of her financial fortunes to philanthropy and created Higher Ground for Humanity in 1998 with her mother. HGH works in education, research, program development, and innovative partnering with other charities. She donates a good portion of her income to the charity and is closely involved with its development.
On the personal front, she tends to keep out of the limelight and lives a relatively private life with her boyfriend Ty Murray, with the exception of fund raising campaigns for her charitable organization.
