Brian Hugh Warner was born on January 5, 1969 at Canton, Ohio. His adopted the name, Marilyn Manson, in 1989 when he started a band with his friend, guitarist Scott Mitchell (Daisy Berkowitz). Manson's name is formed from the names Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. As a child, Manson attended Heritage Christian School, but transferred to and later graduated from Canton's GlenOak High School. After graduating, his family moved to Boca Raton, Florida. In Boca Raton, he studied journalism and theater at Broward Community College, and became the assistant entertainment editor of BCC's student newspaper, the Observer. In 1989, Manson along with his friend and fellow outsider Scott Mitchell formed a band called Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. Bassist Gidget Gein and keyboardist Madonna Wayne-Gacy joined in a short while. The group started self-releasing cassettes and playing gigs. Their Gothic stage shows became notable for Manson's elaborate make-up and homemade special effects. By 1992, the group's performances had become the most popular acts in the South Florida area. In 1993, Nine Inch Nails' (NIN) Trent Reznor offered the band a contract with his label, Nothing Records. He also offered them to open for NIN in the following spring. Manson accepted Trent's offers, and the group's debut LP, Portrait of an American Family, was released during the summer of 1994. The group's notoriety further soared when Twiggy Ramirez replaced the group's bassist Gein. In 1995, the band released Smells Like Children EP. The hit cover of the album-Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)-was a huge hit and helped the band break into the mainstream. In 1996, Manson's new LP, Antichrist Superstar, debuted at the number three spot on the pop album charts. In 1998, the band released their glam-inspired record, Mechanical Animals. A year later they embarked on their promotional tour Last Tour on Earth. At the end of 2000, the band came up with Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) and toured in 2001 to support the album. In May 2003, the group released The Golden Age of Grotesque. The album spent a week on top of the album charts and ended on many critics' year-end Top Ten lists. In April 2004, an album, Lunch Boxes and Choklit Cows appeared, credited to Marilyn Manson the Spooky Kids. However, Manson fought the release and sought court's help to have some artwork removed that was too close to the art to which the singer owned the copyright. At the end of September 2004, the Lest We Forget collection was released. The collection covered the highlights of Manson's career and included a new cover version of Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus. In the past Manson has been linked with Melissa "Missi" Romero, Traci Lords and Rose McGowan. He married burlesque dancer and fetish model Dita Von Teese, on December 3, 2005. Besides rock shows and releasing albums, Manson has helped or provided full scores for several major motion pictures. Some of his more notable soundtrack score contributions include From Hell, The Matrix, and Resident Evil. He has also appeared in small roles in numerous films.
