He is best known for his role as the elf-warrior Legolas, Prince of Mirkwood, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and William in The Pirates of the Caribbean and its sequels. Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Bloom was born on January 13, 1977 in Canterbury, England. His father, Harry Bloom was a South African novelist and activist and died when Orlando was just four years old. His mother raised him and his older sister Samantha. They were encouraged to appreciate the arts and Orlando took to acting. In 1993, when Orlando was 16, he shifted to London and studied at the National Youth Theatre for two years. He then won a scholarship to train at the British American Drama Academy. After some work in stage plays and television, Orlando made his film debut in 1997 with a minor role in Wilde, opposite Stephen Fry who played the role of Oscar Wilde. Orlando next went on to study further for three years at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. While studying there, he had a serious accident when he fell three stories. His back was broken and doctors thought he would not be able to walk again. With his inner strength and determination, Orlando proved them wrong and walked out of the hospital within 12 days. In 1999, just before graduating from Guildhall, Orlando was cast in the role of Legolas Greenleaf, the elf warrior in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. For two months, he learnt horse riding, archery, and swordplay before going for a 14-month shoot of the trilogy in New Zealand. While shooting a scene, Orlando had a serious injury in which he broke his ribs but he recovered soon and completed the filming. In early 2001, Orlando shifted to Los Angeles. He was then cast in Black Hawk Down and he went off to Morocco for filming. Late that year, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released and went on to make history in box-office records. Orlando was now a star. Black Hawk Down was also released soon after and his performance was received well. Orlando next acted in two low-budget British films, Lullaby of Clubland and Deed Poll co-starring with his close friend, German actor and comedian Andre Schneider. The second part of the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was released in late 2002 and was more successful than the first part. In 2003, Orlando cemented his status as a star with the blockbusters The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl opposite Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. That year, he won Best Ensemble Acting at the Screen Actors Guild Awards along with his co-stars for their role in The Return of the King. In 2006, the sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was released to great success worldwide. For Orlando, success has always been accentuated with sequels and he is bound to see much more success.
