Biography

Zooey Deschanel is an American actress of French and Irish American ancestry.

Zooey Claire Deschanel was born on 17 January 1980 in Los Angeles, California. Her father, Caleb Deschanel is an Academy Award-nominated cinematographer and her mother, Mary Jo Weiris is an actress. Her sister, Emily Deschanel, is also an actress. Her French ancestry comes from her paternal grandfather. The rest of the family is Irish American. She was named after the male character in J. D. Salinger's novel Franny and Zooey.

Zooey studied acting at an elite acting summer camp called the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts, which is located in New York. She went to the Northwestern University for some time but quit it to focus on her acting career.

In 1998, Zooey made her television debut with the television series Veronica's Closet in the episode Veronica's Fun and Pirates Are Crazy (1998) as Elena.

In 1999, Zooey made her film debut in Lawrence Kasdan's comedy Mumford.

In 2000, Zooey got positive reviews for her performance in Cameron Crowe's autobiographical Almost Famous (2000). In the film, she played the role of Patrick Fugit's hippie older sister.

Next, in 2001, Zooey was seen in the independent movie Manic. In the film, she played the role of a mental patient.

In 2002, Zooey appeared as Jenny Herk in the Tim Allen film Big Trouble. That year, she also co-starred in Abandon along with Katie Holmes playing the role of her best friend.

In 2003, Zooey played the role of a sexually inquisitive 18-year-old virgin in the film All the Real Girls (2003). She was selected the Best Actress at the Mar del Plata Film Festival and also received a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award. That year, she also worked in the comedy Elf (2003), House Hunting (2003), and It's Better to Be Wanted for Murder Than Not to Be Wanted at All (2003).

In 2005, Zooey starred as Trillian in the science fiction series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005).

In 2006, Zooey was seen in Failure to Launch as Sarah Jessica Parker's neurotic roommate.

Zooey has also been seen on shows such as Frasier and various MTV clips including The Offspring's video She's Got Issues.

On the romantic front, Zooey dated childhood friend and actor Jason Schwartzman for a long time. However, they broke up in 2005. For some time, she also dated Hunter Burgan, the bass player from AFI.

Apart from being an actress, Zooey is also a singer. She has sung in many of her films including Elf, Once Upon a Mattress, The New Guy, and Winter Passing. In the film Winter Passing, in which she starred along with Ed Harris, Will Ferrell, and Amelia Warner her composition Bittersuite was used thematically.
