Videos more videos Biography Janet Jackson is an American Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress. She is best known for her albums Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, The Velvet Rope, and All For You. She is Michael Jackson's sister but is a celebrity in her own right. Janet Damita Jo Jackson was born on May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana. Her father, Joseph Jackson was a crane operator in a steel mill and her mother, Katherine was a store clerk for Sears. She is the youngest in the family with eight siblings. Her older brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael were a singing sensation. When Janet was just seven, she appeared on stage with her brothers. In 1976, Janet made her television debut when she performed with her siblings on the first African-American family variety show called The Jacksons. She soon appeared on TV shows such as Good Times, Diff'rent Strokes, and A New Kind of Family. In 1982, Janet ventured into her musical career with her self-titled debut album. The album was moderately successful with the songs Young Love, Say You Do, and Come Give Your Love to Me. In 1984, Janet released her second album, Dreamstreet, which did not do that well. That year, she eloped with singer James DeBarge. However, their marriage was annulled the next year. It was in 1986 with her third album Control that Janet got her first big break. The album produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis hit the number one spot and propelled her to stardom. It included the hits When I Think Of You, What Have You Done For Me Lately, The Pleasure Principle, and Let's Wait Awhile. Janet was seen in a sexy image in the album that won a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Janet's next album, Rhythm Nation 1814, released in 1989 added to her popularity. It included the hits Alright, Come Back To Me, Miss You Much, Rhythm Nation, Escapade, Black Cat, and Love Will Never Do (Without You). Her video for Rhythm Nation won the Grammy Award for Best Long Form Video. In 1991, Janet got married to dancer and choreographer René Elizondo Jr. in a private ceremony. Their marriage however ended in 1999. In1993, Janet released the album janet. It included the hit That's The Way Love Goes that won a Grammy Award. It also included the hit Any Time, Any Place in which Janet posed in various sexual positions. That year, she also starred in the film Poetic Justice. In 1995, Janet sang with her brother Michael in the hit single Scream. In 1997, Janet released the hit album The Velvet Rope. It included hit Together Again and Got 'Til It's Gone. In 2000, Janet starred in the hit comedy opposite Eddie Murphy in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, and wrote the hit soundtrack Doesn't Really Matter. This song was included in her hit album, All For You. In 2004, Janet performed a duet Rock Your Body with Justin Timberlake at a Super Bowl match. During the performance, Justin tore her top exposing her breast. The controversy surrounding this wardrobe malfunction boosted the sales of her next album Damita Jo.
