Biography
Brigitte Nielsen is a Danish actress, singer, writer, model, and presenter. She is best known for her titular role in the film Red Sonja (1985). She was a popular B-movie actress and is also known as Amazon due to her height of 6 ft 1 in. She was also married to Sylvester Stallone at one time.
Originally named Gitte Nielsen, she was born on July 15, 1963 in Rĝdovre, Denmark. At the age of 16 years, after finishing her high school, she started modeling. She was soon working for leading fashion designers including Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, and Gianfranco Ferré. Her work took her to New York, Paris, Milan, and Berlin.
In 1983, Brigitte got married to Danish musician Kasper Winding. They have a son Julian born in 1984.
In 1985, Brigitte made her film debut with the leading role of Red Sonja in the film Red Sonja opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film was very successful and she left her husband and son to focus on her acting career. During the promo of Red Sonja, she met Sylvester Stallone and after six months on December 15, 1985, they got married. Together, they worked in two films, Rocky IV (1985) and Cobra (1986).
In 1987, Brigitte played the role of the assassin Karla Fry in Beverly Hills Cop II. Shortly after the release of the film, she and Stallone got divorced.
Following the divorce, Brigitte ventured into her music career. In 1987, she went to Italy to work in an Italian television show Festival. While there, she recorded her debut album, Every Body Tells A Story. It included the song Body Next To Body with German singer Falco. The song reached No. 22 in Germany and No. 6 in Austria.
In 1992, Brigitte released her second album, I'm the one..nobody else. However, it was not successful.
In 1999, Brigitte released the dance track No more turning back and it topped the charts in Spain and several other European dance charts. She used the pseudonym Gitta for this song. Other songs with this pseudonym include Tic Toc (2000) and You're no lady (2001) in collaboration with Ru Paul.
In 1992, Brigitte landed the starring role of Black Witch in the television film Fantaghiro. The film had four sequels and kept her busy till 1996.
Brigitte has hosted many television shows including the Italian Sanremo Music Festival in 1992. She has also appeared in many reality shows including the Italian version of The Mole (2004), VH1's The Surreal Life 2004, and Strange Love.
On the personal front, Brigitte has been married five times and has four sons. Her second son Killian was born in 1989 out of wedlock with football player Mark Gastineau. From 1990 to 1992, she was married to photographer/director Sebastian Copeland. She next met Swiss racecar driver Raoul Meyer and was married to him from 17 December 1993 to 2005. They have two sons, Douglas Aaron and Raoul Jr. Ayrton. In 2005, Brigitte got married for the fifth time to 28-year-old Italian barman Mattia Dessi. Since her divorce with Meyer was not finalized, they got married again legally in 2006.
