Videos more videos Biography Naomi Watts is a critically acclaimed Welsh-Australian actress noted for her roles in relatively off best films. Naomi Watts was born on September 1968, in Shoreham, Kent, England. Her father Peter Watts was a sound engineer with Pink Floyd and her mother Myfanwy was an actress. Her parents separated when she was just four years old. Her father died when she was seven. She lived at her birthplace till she was eight after which her mother relocated the family to Naomi's grandparents' home in Llanfawr Farm on the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales. In 1982, when Naomi was 14, her mother moved the family to Sydney, Australia. Naomi attended several acting schools in Sydney. She met Nicole Kidman in the very first lesson in the first school and the two remain good friends till date. In 1986, Naomi went to Japan to work as a model. However, she soon realized that she was not cut out for modeling work and returned to Australia in less than a year. She next worked for a local department store and later took the job of an assistant fashion editor with an Australian fashion magazine, Follow Me. Meanwhile in 1986, Naomi also appeared in small role in For Love Alone. Naomi began her acting career in Australian television, where she appeared in commercials and television series such as Home and Away and Brides of Christ. In 1991, she played a supporting role in Flirting where she costarred with Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton. She moved to Los Angeles to make a career in Hollywood and landed small roles in Matinee (1993) and Tank Girl (1995). Over the years, she also appeared in the short-lived series Sleepwalkers and numerous B-list productions like Children of the Corn (1996). She graduated to supporting roles in Dangerous Beauty (1998) and Strange Planet (1999). Though she was getting more screen time, she was not getting the kind of critical acclaim that she had hoped for. Success came only in 2001, when she appeared in David Lynch's highly acclaimed Mulholland Drive. Her portrayal of a strange double character in the film won her the National Society of Film Critics Award as Best Actress and the National Board of Review award as Breakthrough Performance of the year. The critical acclaim catapulted her to the top of the Hollywood A-list. In 2002, she starred in the English language remake of the Japanese horror film, The Ring. The movie was one of the biggest box office hits of 2002. In 2003, she starred in Ned Kelly opposite Heath Ledger, Orlando Bloom, and Geoffrey Rush and in the Merchant-Ivory film Le Divorce with Kate Hudson. In 2004, Naomi earned her first Academy Award nomination as Best Actress for her performance opposite Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro in director Alejandro González Iñárritu's 21 Grams. In 2005, Naomi appeared in Peter Jackson's King Kong. The film won high praise and has since grossed more than $400 million dollars worldwide. Naomi has dated actor Heath Ledger for several years and is going around with actor Liev Schreiber. Naomi has come a long way from being a bit actress to an Academy Award nomination, and is set to go further as she appears in more commercial films.
