Biography
The Olsen Twins are the twins Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, who are American actresses. They are best known for their role as Michelle Tanner on the hit sitcom, Full House (since 1987).
The Olsen Twins were born on June 13, 1986 in Sherman Oaks, California with Ashley entering the world just two minutes before her twin sister, Mary-Kate. The twins got their big break when they were just a few months old. Their mother, Jarnette took them to an audition for Full House. The twins were hired after they didn't cry when the producers held them. Both the twins shared the role of Michelle. Along with the success of the sitcom, the Olsen Twins became instant celebrities.
The sitcom Full House ran for eight seasons and watching the Olsen Twins grow with each episode endeared them to millions of fans, especially young girls. Soon Full House merchandise such as books and dolls based on Mary-Kate and Ashley was selling like hotcakes. Riding on this popularity wave, a company called Dualstar Entertainment was formed to tap the Olsen Twins' potential.
In 1992, Mary-Kate and Ashley made their film debut together as twins, Sarah Thompson and Julie, respectively in To Grandmother's House We Go. The average success of this film led to their starring in many made-for-television and straight-to-video movies including Double, Double, Toil and Trouble, How the West Was Fun, and It Takes Two.
In 1995, the Olsen Twins starred as daring detectives in the video mystery action series The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley. The tagline of the series was "Will solve any crime by dinner time".
In 1998, Mary-Kate and Ashley starred in the ABC series Two of a Kind.
In 2001, the twins starred in the series So Little Time. This sitcom was not as popular as their other appearances mainly due to its poor plot rather than their performances.
In 2004, after graduating from high school, Mary-Kate and Ashley attended college at New York University. That year, they also starred as adults in their own film, New York Minute.
The Olsen Twins have worked in a staggering 40 video titles with sales of 30 million copies, and six music albums with sales of 1.5 million copies. Their books have sold 29 million copies. Dualstar Entertainment earned $500 million in 2001 and around $1 billion in 2002. When the twins turned 18, they became millionaires with the presidentship of the company.
Even after becoming adults, Mary-Kate and Ashley are still popular among young audiences. They are seen at presentation ceremonies of various shows, including the MTV Video Music Awards.
On April 29, 2004, at the age of 17, Mary-Kate and Ashley received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the youngest celebrities to receive this honor.
