Videos more videos Biography Scarlett Johansson is an American actress of Danish origin. She is best known for her roles in The Horse Whisperer (1998), Ghost World (2000), The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), Lost in Translation (2003), Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003), and The Perfect Score (2004). Scarlett Johansson was born on November 22, 1984 in New York City. Her father, Karsten Johansson, is an architect hailing from Denmark and her mother, Melanie Sloan, is Jewish. Her grandfather, Ejner Johansson, was a screenwriter and director. Scarlett has a twin brother, Hunter who is also an actor. She has two more siblings: an older sister, Vanessa, who is also an actress and an older brother, Adrian. Since the age of 3, she wanted to be an actress. She started acting when she was just 8. In 1994, Scarlett made her film debut in the film North, starring Elijah Wood. The next year, she played the role of Sean Connery's daughter in the thriller Just Cause. In 1996, Scarlett acted in the films If Lucy Fell and Manny & Lo. For her role as Amanda in Manny & Lo, she received a nomination for the 1997 Independent Spirit Award for Best Actress. In 1997, Scarlett appeared in the films Fall and Home Alone 3. However, it was in 1998 at the age of 13 that Scarlett rose to fame when she was cast in the film The Horse Whisperer. She played the role of Grace MacLean, a young girl who suffers a tragic equestrian accident and won the Hollywood Reporter YoungStar Award for her performance. Scarlett next appeared in the film My Brother the Pig (1999) followed by The Man Who Wasn't There and An American Rhapsody in 2001. She also starred in the teen comedy Ghost World (2001) with Thora Birch. In 2002, she appeared in the monster film, Eight Legged Freaks. In 2003, Scarlett gave some very strong performances. She played the role of a young girl in Japan who becomes friends with a washed-up American actor (played by Bill Murray) in Lost in Translation. She also appeared in the lead role in Girl with a Pearl Earring. For her performance in both the films, she received Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress. She however won the 2004 Best Actress British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for her role in Lost in Translation. In 2004, Scarlett acted in the teen comedy The Perfect Score, A Love Song for Bobby Long, A Good Woman, and In Good Company. In 2005, Scarlett starred with Ewan McGregor in action film The Island. That year, she also starred in the Woody Allen film Match Point, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2006, Scarlett acted in another Woody Allen film, Scoop as well as in director Brian De Palma's The Black Dahlia. That year, she also appeared in the nude on the cover of Vanity Fair with Keira Knightley and Tom Ford. On the personal front, Scarlett has been linked to Derek Jeter, Benicio Del Toro and Jared Leto as well as her The Black Dahlia co-star Josh Hartnett.
