Biography

Helen Mirren is an Emmy-award winning British actress of Russian descent. She is best known for her role as the female detective Jane Tennison in the television series Prime Suspect (From 1991). She is also known for her role as Elizabeth II in The Queen (2006) and as Elizabeth I in the television film Elizabeth I (2005).

Helen's birth name was Ilynea Lydia Mironoff. She was born on 26 July 1945 in Hammersmith, London, England. Her mother is English and her father a Russian. Her grandfather was a Russian aristocrat and diplomat and had gone with his wife and son (Helen's father) to London on official business. They got stuck in London after the 1917 Russian Revolution.

Since a very young age, Helen knew she wanted to be an actress. She joined the National Youth Theatre. In 1965, at the age of 19, she gained recognition for her role as Cleopatra in Shakespeare's play Anthony and Cleopatra (1965). She next joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967.

In 1968, Helen made her film debut in Herostratus. Her next film was Peter Hall's adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream (1968). In 1969, Helen was cast as a young seductress in Age of Consent (1969). The film had a little nudity and contributed to Helen's sexy image.

In 1972, Helen toured with Peter Brook's experimental International Centre of Theatre Research in Africa and America. That year, she also did a sexy role in Ken Russell's Savage Messiah (1972). In 1973, Helen acted in the Lindsay Anderson musical drama O Lucky Man! (1973).

In 1979, Helen played the role of Caligula's sister in the controversial film Caligula (1979) about the pervert emperor. The film was later released with hardcore pornographic sections with Penthouse models. The year 1979 also saw her getting critical acclaim for her role in the British gangster film The Long Good Friday (1979) opposite Bob Hoskins. Helen went on to increase her appeal with seductive roles in movies like John Boorman's Excalibur (1981), Cal (1984), The Mosquito Coast (1986), and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989).

In 1991, Helen started appearing as the detective Jane Tennison in the television series Prime Suspect. The role made her a household name. The Oscar nomination for her role as the queen in The Madness of King George (1994) went on to increase her popularity. She won her second Oscar nomination for her role in the comedy Gosford Park (2001).

It wasn't long before she won an award for her acting. In 2006, Helen won the award for the Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role as Elizabeth II in The Queen. She also received the Emmy in 2005 for her role as Elizabeth I in 2005 in a television film.

In 1997, Helen married American film director Taylor Hackford with whom she had a live-in relationship since 1986. In 2003, Helen was honored with the title of Dame Commander of the British Empire.
