Biography

Elena Dementieva is a Russian professional tennis player. She has been ranked among the top five women tennis players in WTA.

Elena Vyacheslavovna Dementieva was born on October 15, 1981 in Moscow. Her father, Viatcheslav worked as an electrical engineer and her mother, Vera worked as a teacher. Her parents loved playing tennis and enrolled their children in prestigious tennis clubs. When Elena was just seven, she joined the Spartak Club, where she trained for three years under Rauza Islanova, mother and coach of Marat Safin, a leading Russian tennis player.

When Elena was just 13, she played and won at Les Petits Aces, in France, her first international tournament.

Elena turned pro in 1998 and within two years in 2000 was ranked No.12. In 2000, she also won the silver medal at the Sydney Olympics beating Jelena Dokic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in semifinals but losing to Venus Williams in the final 6-2, 6-4. That year, she also defeated Lindsay Davenport in the first round of Chase Championships. She also reached the semifinals at Indian Wells, the US Open, and the Chase Championships.

In 2001, Elena was ranked No.8. However, it was a tough year for her as she was plagued with injuries. She lost her aggressiveness and her ranking started to fall.

In 2002, Elena came back strongly to reach the fourth round in Wimbledon and the French Open. She also paired with Janette Husarova of Slovakia to reach the final of the U.S. Open and win the year-ending WTA Tour Championships.

It was in 2003 that Elena won her first WTA singles title when she won at the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, Florida beating Lindsay Davenport. She won two more titles that year in Bali and Shanghai beating Chanda Rubin in both the finals. She thus reclaimed her No.8 ranking.

The year 2004 was a terrific year for Elena. She beat Venus Williams in the quarterfinals in Miami and reached the final where she lost to Serena Williams. She also reached her first Grand Slam final at the French Open beating Lindsay Davenport in the fourth round, Amélie Mauresmo in the quarterfinals, and Paola Suarez in the semifinals. She then lost to Myskina in the first all-Russian Grand Slam final. She reached her second Grand Slam final at the U.S. Open and lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova in another all-Russian final. She next won the title in Hasselt and reached the Moscow finals. That year on October 25, Elena reached her career high ranking of No.4.

In 2005, Elena managed to reach just the semifinal at the U.S. Open. She also reached the final in Charleston, losing to Henin Hardenne, and Philadelphia, losing to Mauresmo. She paired with Flavia Pennetta of Italy, to reach her second doubles final at the U.S. Open.
