Biography

Andy Roddick is an American professional tennis player and a former World No. 1. He is best known for winning the US Open in 2003 and for his fast serve and powerful forehands. Clocked at 155 mph, or 246.2 km/h, he holds the record for the fastest serve in professional tennis.

Andrew Stephen Roddick was born on August 30, 1982 in Omaha, Nebraska. His father, Jerry is an investor and his mother, Blanche runs the Andy Roddick Foundation. His parents encouraged him along with his older brothers to excel in sports. His oldest brother, Lawrence was an expert in springboard diving and his older brother, John played tennis and owns the Roddick-Moros International Tennis Academy in San Antonio.

When Andy was four, his family shifted to Austin, Texas and when he was 10, they shifted again to Boca Raton, Florida for John's tennis career. While in Florida, Andy took a keen interest in tennis and quickly excelled in it.

In 2000, Andy won the junior Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles and became the top junior player. That year, at the age of 18, he turned pro. He went on to win a Challenger event in Austin and a title in Burbank and reach the semifinals in a Las Vegas tournament.

In 2001, Andy won his first ATP title in Atlanta. He also made it to the third round at the French Open and Wimbledon. He won two more ATP titles that year and finished in the top 20.

In 2002, Andy won two ATP titles and defeated Pete Sampras in the final at Houston. He reached the quarterfinals at the US Open and made it to the top 10. At the age of just 20, he had earned over a million dollars as prize money. He was now more than just a sports celebrity with magazines like GQ and People portraying him as a hunk.

The year 2003 was the breakthrough year for Andy. He made it to the semifinals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. But the achievement of the year was winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open beating Juan Carlos Fererro in straight sets. He ended that year as the World No. 1.

In 2004, Andy could make it only to the quarterfinals of the US Open. He also made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open and to the final at the Wimbledon.

In 2005, Andy made it to his second consecutive final at the Wimbledon and to the semifinals at the Australian Open. He, however, fared dismally at the US Open losing in the first round.

In 2006, Andy reached the finals of the US Open where he lost to Roger Federer.

Andy started 2007 by reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open where he again lost to Roger Federer 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. But he could have many aces up his sleeve.
