Biography

Sophie Marceau is an award winning French actress. She is best known for her roles as Elektra King in the Bond film The World is Not Enough (1999) and as Princess Isabelle in Mel Gibson's Braveheart (1995).

Sophie Danièle Sylvie Maupu was born on November 17, 1966, in Paris, France. Her father was a truck driver in the Parisian suburbs. Young Sophie was as removed from the life of glamour and movies as can be possible.

It was when she was 14 that a friend persuaded her to try for a role in Claude Pinoteau's La Boum (1980). Claude was looking for fresh talent for the role and signed Sophie for the starring role. The film was a huge hit and made Sophie a star overnight.

The success of the movie led to a sequel released two years later. Sophie's performance was appreciated and in 1983, she was named the winner of the César Award (France's equivalent of an Oscar) for "Most Promising Actress".

In her early career, Sophie was tied to a contract with Gaumont-a movie studio. However, Sophie felt that she had to break free from the contract to take on the roles that she liked. At 16 years of age, she broke the contract by reportedly paying one million French francs. Though she had to borrow the money for the payment, it turned out to be a good decision in the long run.

Free from contractual obligations Sophie started taking more dramatic and challenging roles and moving away from her teenage star persona established by La Boum movies.

When she was 18, she appeared in Fort Saganne (1984) opposite Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve. In the same year she was seen in Joyeuses Pâques-a movie based on the play by Jean Poiret.

In 1985 she appeared in Andrzej Zulawski's L'Amour braque. In 1986 she was seen in Descente aux Enfers. In 1988 she starred in L'Etudiante and Chouans!. For Chouans!, she was awarded the Best Romantic Actress at the 1988 International Festival of Romantic Movies.

She appeared in two more movies by Andrzej Zulawski, her partner at that time, Mes nuits sont plus belles que vos jours (1989) and La Note bleue (1991). In 1991, she ventured into theater with Eurydice. This role earned her Marceau a Moliere Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

In the early 1990s Sophie once again yearned for change from the serious dramatic and roles she was doing and started taking on lighter and fluffier roles. She was seen in comedies like Fanfan (1993) and La Fille de D'Artagnan (1994). She was seen on stage again in 1994, as Eliza Dolittle in Pygmalion.

Despite her success and popularity in the French circuit, Sophie's international recognition came only with her role as Princess Isabelle in the Oscar-winning epic, Braveheart (1995).

Over the years, Sophie appeared in many American films like Lost & Found and A Midsummer Night's Dream. However, her next most recognizable role in was as the Bond Girl Elektra King in the 19th Bond movie, The World Is Not Enough.

Besides acting, Sophie has also successfully tried her hand behind the camera. She first directed a 9-minute film, L'Aube a L'envers (1995), which opened for a film at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2002, she made her directorial debut in a feature film, Parlez-moi d'amour. She was awarded Best Director by the jury of the 2002 Montreal World Film Festival for this film.
