Biography
Keira Knightley is a British actress known for her roles in the films Bend It Like Beckham (2002) and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).
Keira Knightley was born on March 26, 1985 into a showbiz family. When she was just three, she wanted an agent because she wasn't getting as many calls as her parents. She was finally granted her wish when she was six, on the condition that she'd study every day during her summer holidays.
Keira Knightley started her acting career at the age of seven when she made her television debut in Royal Celebration (1993). Her film career took off at the age of nine with A Village Affair (1994). She got her first major role as Sabé, Padmé Amidala's decoy, in the 1999 blockbuster Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. Knightley was lucky to get the role because of a close resemblance to Natalie Portman, who played Padmé. In fact, with the make-up, it was hard even for their mothers to tell them apart.
Keira Knightley got her first starring role in 2001 as the daughter of Robin Hood in a made-for-television Walt Disney Productions film, Princess of Thieves. She starred in the thriller The Hole (2001), in which she did her first nude scene. She also worked in a television mini-series remake of Doctor Zhivago (2002).
In 2002, Knightley got her big break with Gurinder Chadha's Bend It Like Beckham. Her portrayal of Juliette 'Jules' Paxton, a tomboyish, soccer player won her critical acclaim as well as a great fan following. She won the London Critics Circle Film Award for British Newcomer of the Year and the Bordeaux International Festival of Women in Cinema Award for Best Actress.
Her next big break was the blockbuster movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) with Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. With this movie, Keira Knightley finally arrived in Hollywood and stardom at just 18.
In 2003, she was part of the star-studded cast of Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Liam Neeson in Richard Curtis' Love Actually.
In 2004, she played the role of Guinevere opposite Clive Owen in the adventure King Arthur.
In 2005, Keira starred in John Maybury 's thriller The Jacket and director Tony Scott's film Domino. She played Elizabeth Bennet in a movie adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel Pride and Prejudice. The movie did very well in the US and UK. She received a Best Actress - Comedy/Musical Golden Globes nomination and an Academy Award for Best Actress nomination for the role. This further established her star status.
Knightley appeared nude with Scarlett Johansson on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine's March 2006 'Hollywood' issue and was voted the sexiest woman by For Him Magazine (UK) in a poll.
In 2006, she starred in the sequel Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest which has broken box-office records.
