Biography
Tom Felton is a British actor best known for his role of Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films.
Thomas Andrew Felton was born on September 22, 1987 in Kensington, London to his mother, Sharon, and his father, Peter. He was raised in Epsom along with his three brothers, Jonathan, Ashley, and Chris. As a child, Tom was highly talented. When he was just seven years old, he started singing in a church choir. While at school, he has been a member of four choirs. He was even offered a place in the Guildford Cathedral Choir.
An actress friend of the family recognized Tom's talent and asked him to try out acting. Tom soon got an agent and within two weeks, auditioned for an international commercial campaign along with four hundred other children. Tom bagged the contract and soon went abroad to work in the commercials. He thus started his career in 1995 and started appearing in a number of top television commercials.
However, Tom's first break came in 1997 when he made his film debut playing the role of Peagreen Clock in Peter Hewitt's The Borrowers. This role was followed by the role of Louis in the film Anna and the King (1999) that starred Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat. With these roles, Tom shot to fame.
In 1999, Tom gave a memorable performance as Thomas Ingham, a witness to crime in the television series Second Sight opposite Clive Owen.
It was however, in 2001, that Tom got his big break when he bagged the role of Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) (aka Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone). For the role, he changed his hair color from natural brown to blonde.
Tom reprised the role of Draco Malfoy in a series of Harry Potter films that were released worldwide and became blockbusters. These include Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005). Apparently, Tom never read any of the Harry Potter books and started reading the books only after the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Tom enjoys playing sports, such as football, ice-skating, rollerblading, basketball, cricket, swimming, and tennis. His favorite hobby is carp fishing and he goes to St. Lawrence in New York almost every year to compete in the Carping Competition.
Tom went to the Howard Effingham School until the May of 2004. Tom has kept his plans to attend college on hold so that he can focus on his film career.
