Paulina Rubio
Biography Paulina Rubio is a Mexican singer and actress popular in Latin America, Spain, and the United States. Paulina Rubio Dosamantes was born on June 17, 1971 in Mexico City, Mexico. Her mother Susana Dosamantes was a famous Mexican actress. She has a younger brother named Enrique. As a child, Paulina traveled with her celebrity mother and spent time in native Mexico as well as Los Angeles and Spain. By the time she was 7, Paulina was taking singing, acting, jazz, painting, and dance lessons at a prestigious performing arts school, El Centro de Capacitacion de Televisa. On April 30, 1982, at the age of 10, Paulina began her career when she debuted in a children's pop group called Timbiriche. This Mexican pop group made Paulina a star, along with fellow member, Thalia. Paulina recorded a total of 11 albums as part of her 10-year involvement from 1982 to 1991 with Timbiriche. In 1991, Rubio left Timbiriche to focus on launching a solo career. She took private jazz, singing and phonetic studies in Los Angeles and traveled to Spain to record her solo debut album, La Chica Dorada (The Golden Girl) under the EMI Latin record label. The album released in 1992 had number one singles such as Mio and Amor De Mujer. The album went platinum in 1993 and was certified Diamond in 1997. The album went on to sell more than 1.2 million copies worldwide. In 1993, she released 24 Kilates (24 Karats), which sold more than 150,000 copies in just three weeks after its release. The album contained the hits Nieva, Nieva and Asunto De Doas. El Tiempo es Oro followed in 1995 and her last album with the EMI Latin record label, Planeta Paulina was released in 1996. Paulina next left the music scene and moved to Spain. She was absent from the music scene for almost four years. She returned to the music scene in 1999 with Universal Music Latino when she recorded Vive El Verano, the theme song to a summer TV show she was presenting in Spain. In early 2000, she launched her fifth studio album, the self-titled Paulina. She was nominated three times at the second annual Latin Grammy Awards for "Album Of The Year," "Song Of The Year," and "Best Female Pop Vocal Album". Paulina entered the English-language market in 2002 with the hit single Don't Say Goodbye. On June 18, 2002, Paulina's first English language album Border Girl was released. The album debuted at the 11th position on the "Billboard Hot 200" Chart and was certified Gold in the US. In 2004, she released the hugely successful Pau-Latina. The album won Paulina several awards during the year and she was nominated for a Latin Grammy for "Best Pop Female Vocal Album" in 2004. In 2005, she was the only woman nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Latin Pop Vocal Album." Her popularity led her to host The MTV Latin America Awards making her the first female artist to do so. She was also named People En Espanol's 2005 Star of the Year. In 2006, Paulina released Ananda. The album reached the #1 spot on many charts in countries all over Latin America, the U.S., and Spain. Paulina has also appeared on numerous TV shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, and CD:UK. She has performed at many international festivals, including Wango Tango, Festivalbar, Festival di Sanremo in Italy, and the Nobel Peace Prize Gala in Oslo, Norway. She has also appeared in magazines like Rolling Stone, Stuff, and Blender. Paulina's energetic live performances and dance-infused pop tracks have already helped her albums sell over the 16 million mark and she looks good to add many more millions by the time she goes out of the music scene.
