Biography
Kelly Clarkson is a Grammy Award-winning American pop singer. She became famous with her win in the talent show American Idol in 2002 and came to be known as the first American Idol.
Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born on April 24, 1982 in Fort Worth, Texas and grew up in Burleson, Texas. When young, Kelly wanted to be a marine biologist but on seeing the film Jaws, she changed her mind. Fate soon pushed her into the direction that would make her a star. When she was just 13, she was heard singing in the hallway of her school by her teacher. She recognized Kelly's talent and encouraged her to sing for the school choir.
Kelly was soon a regular in the choir and was also offered a place in the Texas All-State Choir. After high school, Kelly decided to pursue her music career. Her talent drew much attention, and after graduating from high school, she set out to sell herself to record labels and made some demos. However, she didn't get any break and shifted to Los Angeles to try her luck.
Kelly soon started working under the famous songwriter Gerry Goffin. However, Goffin fell ill and Kelly had to find work in television and films to make ends meet. She got a small role in the television series Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and the film Issues 101 (2002). However, it was music that Kelly wanted a break in and when her apartment burnt down, she went back home to Burleson.
Back home, Kelly worked as a Red Bull promoter. Her dreams got new wings when a friend encouraged her to audition for the new singing contest on television, American Idol (2002). Kelly impressed the judges at the audition itself where she sang Aretha Franklin's Respect, which went on to be Kelly's signature song. Kelly won the American Idol title in September, 2002. She also won the RCA record contract worth a million dollars.
In April 2003, Kelly released her debut album Thankful featuring the hit songs Miss Independent and Beautiful Disaster. The album sold two million copies and was certified double platinum.
In 2004, Kelly released her second album Breakaway. It probably symbolized her attempt to breakaway from the limited image of the "American Idol". The album included hit numbers Since U Been Gone, Behind These Hazel Eyes, Walk Away, and Because of You. Kelly won the 2006 Grammy Award for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for her song Since U Been Gone. She also won the 2006 Grammy Award for "Best Pop Vocal Album". Apart from the Grammies, Kelly also won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video in 2005 and 2006 for Since U Been Gone and Because of You, respectively. Kelly is on her way to be a music icon, not just an American Idol.
