Biography

Britney Spears is an American pop singer. She is best known for her albums Baby One More Time and Oops!…I Did It Again.

Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981 in McComb, Mississippi and grew up in Kentwood, Louisiana. Her father, James Parnell Spears is a building contractor and her mother, Lynne Irene Bridges was a school teacher. As a child, she was highly interested in music and sang in the choir in her local church. She studied for three summers in New York at the Off Broadway Dance Center and Professional Performing Arts School. She also appeared in many commercials and off-Broadway shows. When she was 11, she became part of the Mickey Mouse Club. She lived in Orlando for two years to do the show.

In 1999, when Britney was just 17, she released her debut album ...Baby One More Time. The video for the title track (Hit Me) Baby One More Time featured Britney in a Roman Catholic Schoolgirl outfit and was a hit worldwide and made Britney a celebrity overnight. The album with the hits Crazy and Sometimes topped the Billboard charts and sold over 20 million copies. She also won many awards including the 1999 MTV Europe Awards for Best Female Artist, Best Pop Artist and Best Breakthrough Artist.

Britney next co-authored a book with her mother called Heart to Heart and did an extensive worldwide tour.

In 2000, Britney released her second album Oops!...I Did It Again. The album included the hit singles Oops!...I Did It Again Lucky, Stronger and Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know. With the overtly erotic videos, she captured the attention of millions of fans.

In 2001, Britney released her third album, Britney that included the hits Overprotected, I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman and Slave 4 U. She also co-hosted the American Music Awards with L.L. Cool J. At the Super Bowl, she performed along with Aerosmith, 'N Sync, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige. That year, she also ended up with a multimillion-dollar endorsement contract with Pepsi and catapulted into the super star zone.

In 2002, Britney made her film debut with a starring role in Crossroads. She also did a cameo in Austin Powers in Goldmember.

In 2003, Britney scandalized everyone when she kissed Madonna along with Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Awards. This was probably a publicity stunt for her forthcoming album In The Zone that included a remix of Madonna's Material Girl. Madonna appeared in the video for Me Against the Music. The album sold more than 609,000 copies in its first week of release and included the hit Toxic.

On the personal front too, Britney has been grabbing headlines. On January 3, 2004, she got married to Jason Allen Alexander, her childhood friend, in Las Vegas after a drinking binge. Their marriage was annulled just 55 hours later on January 5th. That same year in September 2004, Britney married her former back-up dancer Kevin Federline. They have two sons, Sean Preston (born September 14, 2005) and Jayden (September 12, 2006). In November that year, Britney filed for divorce.
