He took part in numerous talent shows. He started off with modeling in various commercials. He even appeared in an unbilled role in Edward Scissorhands (1990). Around the same time, he became part of a children's band and left formal school and took up home tuitions so that he could concentrate on his career as a performer. Nick Carter was just about 13 when he got his big break. Producer Lou Pearlman spotted him in the children's band and made him a member of the boy band, Backstreet Boys that he was training and promoting. Nick was the youngest member when the band formed in 1992 but he went on to become the core of the band and perhaps the most popular among the members. Backstreet Boys started off with a tour of Europe and were a great hit. It was only in 1996 that they broke the US and Canadian charts with the release of the album Backstreet and the singles Quit Playin Games (with my Heart) and As Long as You Love Me. The Backstreet Boys continued enjoying enviable success for the next few years till 2000 when their third album, Black & Blue was not received well. Nick Carter then took a well-deserved break-he had toured the world with the band for seven years. This break resulted in his working with KNS (Josh Schwartz and Brian Keirulf) on his first solo album. It resulted in a rock n roll and RB album, Now or Never, which reflects his positive personality and what he feels. It first appeared on Jive in October 2002. Carter released the album in February 2003 during his first solo tour. The album reached #17 on Billboard 200 and was certified Gold. The positive energy and vibes of the album won Nick Carter many fans, and he was named "The Sexiest Man in the World" in the 2002 CosmoGirl Magazine poll. In 2004, Nick Carter also resumed his acting career with the horror film The Hollow (2004) opposite Kevin Zegers. In 2005, Nick Carter went back on tour with the Backstreet Boys for promoting the album Never Gone with the single Incomplete. The album reached #3 in the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. They also toured Europe that year. Nick Carter's success has also helped shape up his brother Aaron's singing career. Nick Carter had a relationship with the socialite and hotel heiress Paris Hilton in late 2003. He even got a tattoo with the name of Paris. However, their relationship came to an end in 2004. Nick had to then cover the tattoo with phrase "Old Habits Die Hard" and a skull and crossbones design.
