Biography

Girls Aloud is a popular British girl band. The band is best known for their hit debut single Sound of the Underground/Stay Another Day.

Girls Aloud was formed on November 30, 2002 on the British reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals. Its members are Nadine Elizabeth Louise Coyle, Cheryl Ann Tweedy, Sarah Nicole Harding, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Jane Walsh.

Nadine was born on June 15, 1985 in Derry, Northern Ireland and went to Thornhill College. Cheryl was born on June 30, 1983 in Newcastle, England and attended Walker Comprehensive School. Sarah was born on November 17, 1981 in Ascot and studied in Surrey and Manchester. Nicola was born on October 5, 1985 in Stanford and went to St. Chad's school in Runcorn. Kimberley was born on November 20, 1981 in Bradford and studied there. Though from different places and backgrounds, all of them dreamt of having a singing career. Nicola and Sarah were even part of other bands, which were unsuccessful.

In 2002, the reality show Popstars: The Rivals was launched to select a girl band and a boy band that would compete with each other for the top Christmas single of the year. More than 10,000 people came for the audition. Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and Geri Halliwell were the judges and they chose the final 10. After this stage, the audience eliminated one contestant every week through polling. On November 30, the bands, One True Voice (the rival boy band), and Girls Aloud were formed.

On December 16, Girls Aloud released their first single Sound of the Underground/Stay Another Day. The band won the battle against the boy band, One True Voice and the single reached number one.

In May 2003, Girls Aloud released their first album, Sound of the Underground. It included the hits No Good Advice and Life Got Cold. Their three singles reached the top three positions. In November that year, the girls released Jump, the soundtrack of the film Love Actually. A re-issue of their debut album included Jump and the album was certified platinum.

In 2004, Girls Aloud released their second album What Will the Neighbours Say?, which was certified platinum within the first month of its release. Even critics thought it to be better than the first. It included the hits The Show, Love Machine, I'll Stand by You, and Wake Me Up.

In 2005, Girls Aloud released their third album, Chemistry. It included the hits Long Hot Summer, See the Day, Biology, and Whole Lotta History. They also equaled the record held by Spice Girls of having ten consecutive Top 10 singles in the UK.

In 2006, the girls released the album The Sound of Girls Aloud with the hit Something Kinda Ooooh and their previous hits.
