Rowland showed a keen interest and talent in singing from a very young age. At the age of 4, after hearing Whitney Houston sing, she decided to be a singer. After Rowland's family shifted to Houston, Rowland teamed up with Beyonce Knowles, LaTavia Robertson, and LeToya Luckett to perform at local events and talent shows. After joining the band, Rowland lived with the family of Beyonce Knowles because her mother worked as a live-in nanny and found it difficult to take Rowland to rehearsals. In 1997, just before finishing high school, the band Destiny's Child consisting of the four girls, released their debut album called Destiny's Child. The multi-platinum single No, No, No featuring a remix by Wyclef Jean launched the success of Destiny's Child. In 1999, the band released their second album The Writing's on the Wall including the hit singles Jumpin', Jumpin', Say My Name, and Bills, Bills, Bills. At the 2001 Grammy Awards, Say My Name won the award for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal" and "Best R&B Song". Their next album Survivor included the hits Bootylicious and Independent Women Part I that was the theme song of Charlie's Angels (2000). The track Survivor got Destiny's Child their third Grammy award for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal". In 2002, Rowland went solo and released the album Simply Deep. Rowland made a mark as a solo singer with the hit Dilemma featuring Nelly. The song won her a Grammy award for the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. The other songs from the album such as Stole and Can't Nobody were impressive but not as great as Dilemma. Riding on the wave of her popularity, Rowland tried out acting. She made her film debut in 2003 with the role of Kia in the film Freddy vs. Jason. She next worked in the film The Seat Filler released on DVD and VHS. She has also been seen on UPN sitcoms such as The Hughleys, Eve, and Girlfriends. In 2004, Rowland returned to the girl band, Destiny's Child along with Beyoncé Knowles and Michelle Williams to release their fourth and final album, Destiny Fulfilled. It included hits like Lose My Breath, Soldier, Girl, and Cater 2 U. At the 2005 World Music Awards, Rowland and other members of Destiny's Child were honored as the biggest selling girl band of all time with record sales of over 50 million.
