He is best known for his goal-scoring skills and his two World Cup goals that he scored from direct free kicks. He is also famous for being married to former Spice Girl Victoria Adams. David Robert Joseph Beckham was born on May 2, 1975 in Leytonstone, England. His father, Ted Beckham, was a kitchen fitter and his mother, Sandra West, worked as a hairdresser. Football was always a passion with David. When he was just 11, he won the Bobby Charlton Soccer Skills Award. In 1991, David signed a Youth Training Scheme contract. In January 1992, 17-year-old David turned pro and signed a professional contract with Manchester United. He was part of the team that won the F.A. Youth Cup and contributed a goal in the win. However, it was only three years later in 1995 that David made it to United's first team when he appeared in a Premier League match against Leeds United. By the 1996-'97 season, David was a regular in the team playing as a right midfielder. In 1996, he helped the team win the double of the F.A. cup and the Premiership. The same year, he also played his first game for the England national football team against Moldova. He scored his first international goal in June 1998 in a game against Colombia. In 1998, he also appeared in his first World Cup. However, he received a lot of criticism and abuse when he was sent off for violent conduct in a game against Argentina. England lost the match in the penalty shootout and was eliminated from the tournament. In the 1998-99 season, David helped United win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. This was a rare treble by any team and a unique feat in English football. In 1999, David came in 2nd in the European Ballon d'Or awards and as FIFA's World Player of the Year. In November 2000, he was designated the captain of the English national team and helped them qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. For his performances in 2001, he was voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2001, and finished runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the Year award. In 2002, he signed another three-year contract with United and along with his endorsement deals became the highest paid player in the world at that time. However, his relationship with manager Sir Alex Fergusen fell out shortly and he transferred to Real Madrid in 2003 for a transfer fee of $41 million. Over his 11-year career at United, David made almost 400 appearances and scored 85 goals. Though David's performances with Real have been impressive, as a team Real has performed poorly since the time David joined it. David also led England in the Euro 2004 and 2006 FIFA World Cup. But, the team did not do well in these competitions. After 2006, he stepped down from the team's captaincy after leading the side in 58 games over six years. Apart from his on field performances, David has also been in news for his personal life. In 1997, he gained lots of publicity when he started dating Victoria Adams-"Posh Spice" of the pop music group Spice Girls. David and Victoria married on July 4, 1999 at a highly publicized wedding at Luttrellstown Castle, Ireland. Since then the couple has constantly been in news for various issues ranging from David's infidelity to threats of kidnapping of their children. Their son Brooklyn Joseph Beckham was born on March 4th 1999, Romeo James Beckham was born on September 1st 2002, and Cruz David Beckham was born on February 20th 2005. Over his career, David has seen the worst when he was blamed for England's world cup losses and ridiculed for his conduct in his personal life. He has also been the darling of masses, because of his legendry free kicks and timely performances on the field, and his good looks. Even now when he is no longer the captain of the England football team and is on the other side of his best football performances, he will be in the limelight for many years just on the basis of his immense global appeal and popularity.
