Biography
Heather was born on January 12th 1968 in Adldershot, Hampshire, England. She had a difficult life growing up. Her mother left the family when she was nine; Heather and her siblings were left in the care of their abusive father. Her father eventually ended up in prison and Heather moved to London to live with her mother. While still in her teen years she ran away from home and lived on the streets, homeless, for some time. She found employment in various odd jobs until using her innate business skills to begin forming and selling various successful businesses. Later she began a career in modeling.
In 1990 she moved to Slovenia (the former Northern Yugoslavia) which happened to be at the beginning of that countries civil war. She was determined to take action to help refuges of the war and for two years modeled in order to raise funds for those in desperate need in the war torn country. She also worked with various governmental agencies to establish refugee crisis center, hospitals and housing for the homeless.
She married Alfie Karmal on May 6, 1989 and the couple divorced in 1991. Two years later she was in a tragic accident and was struck by a police motorcycle while crossing the road near Kensington Palace. She suffered crushed ribs, a punctured lung and had to have her left leg amputated below the knee. She was given a prosthetic leg and started campaigning to help others in need of prostheses.
Heather married Sir Paul McCartney on June 11, 2002 in the village of Glaslough in County Monaghan, Ireland. On October 28th, 1003 she gave birth to the couples daughter, Beatrice Milly McCartney. The couple announced their separation in May of 2006.
Heather continues to be an activist for amputees in need, the abolition of land mines and animal rights causes. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Association.
