He is also known for his gangster image and has survived despite being shot and stabbed. Curtis James Jackson III was born on July 6, 1975 Southside Jamaica, Queens. He had a tough time as a child growing up fatherless in his rough neighborhood. His mother was a drug hustler and he learnt her hustling ways. When 50 Cent was just eight years old, his mother was murdered in a drug deal. He was then raised by his grandparents. However, when 50 Cent was in his early teens, he followed his mother's example and became a hustler. He made a name for himself in the drug world. However, when his son was born, he mellowed down and directed his energy to rap music. 50 Cent soon met Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC, one of hip-hop's pioneer DJs. Jay recognized 50 Cent's potential and helped him polish his skills as a lyricist. Jay also signed 50 Cent for his JMJ Records music label. In 1999, 50 Cent left JMJ and joined the production team of Track Masters. He was also signed by Columbia Records. He worked on his debut album, Power of the Dollar and one of its tracks, How to Rob became a big hit on New York Radio. Thought the album was not released, it gained considerable popularity through mix tapes in New York. In 2000, 50 Cent was shot at nine times and hit three times in a shooting arranged by a Queens drug dealer. Though he survived the shooting, Columbia Records cancelled its contract with the controversial rapper. However, 50 Cent didn't give up and came back strongly with two self-released albums, Guess Who's Back? and 50 Cent Is The Future. Again, his clever lyrics helped him achieve recognition via mix tapes. One of the mix tapes found its way to hip-hop superstar Eminem and 50 Cent soon landed a one million dollar contract with Eminem's Shady Records and Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records. He was now an overnight celebrity. Within three months, 50 Cent was seen on the soundtrack for 8 Mile. He also released his debut album, Get Rich Or Die Tryin', which sold 1.5 million copies in its first week and a half of release. It includes the hit single In Da Club, which topped popularity charts across US. 50 Cent has also signed an agreement with Interscope Records to develop artists under the imprint G-Unit Records. He has also come up with The New Breed DVD, which includes the world premiere of his video, Many Men.
